Tyre size help
Discussion
I am looking to get some winter tyres for my 330Ci, the rear tyres are currently 255/35/18. One tyre supplier says i can fit 235/40/18 on the rims, another says not can anybody help please?
The issue is price for the winter 255/35/18's so i'm just looking for a cheaper possibly narrower tyre.

I'm guessing standard wheels? 8.5 inch wide at the back so the narrower option should be fine. I've seen 225 fitted all round on staggered wheels for winter tyres and they weren't excessively stretched, you will cry if you kerb them though.
Not sure what brand it was I saw fitted though, some manufacturers widths can vary a bit.

Tread carefully with Falken, I think their tyres are on the narrow side of normal. 235 might be a better bet with that brand.
Best checking with manufacturer spec, eg Goodyear reckon a 215/40 is good up to 8.5 inch rim
ETA http://www.tirerack.com has specs for most brands and sizes on their site, HTH

Click on sizes and spec, 225/40/18 can go on rims from 7.5 to 9 inch. Looks like a goer then, kerb protection will be non existant though I would imagine.

I've got 235/40/18 winter tyres all round on my staggered set of MV3s (8.5J on the rear). I bought them as a set for winter this year so haven't used them yet, however they are second hand as I bought them from a 335i owner who ran them last winter.
Bizarrely, after buying the wheels I immediately had them refurbished. The refurbisher was initially reluctant to re-fit the 235s onto the 8.5Js however I reassured him that it was acceptable so he proceeded to fit them. When I collected the wheels he advised me (with a straight face) to go slowly round roundabouts incase it fell off the rims!

Thanks for that, i was thinking hang the expense and just do it properly but that gives me some hope of saving a few quid Click on sizes and spec, 225/40/18 can go on rims from 7.5 to 9 inch. Looks like a goer then, kerb protection will be non existant though I would imagine.

I'm not planning to go near any kerbs!!
