I'm after a cheap set of tyres to get my "Guff Racing" project M.O.T'd and maybe survive a track day or two.

Are these any good? Earls do some good stuff but "good" and "budget" don't usually go well together.

In case you don't know this is "Guff Racing"....

I had a set on the BMW when I bough a set of alloys from someone.

They lost traction smooothly but early and squealed a lot, but I didn't die so take from that what you will. They seemed to wear well, but I replaced them with Continental (3s I think) and the difference was of course night and day.

If it's just to tide you over then they'll be fine. They were very easy slide in the snow though.

I'd be looking for Matador, Nexen or Falken instead of those.

If you put Fullrun tyres on and drive in the wet you will die!

I had some on the front of my Volvo and I did in fact die! took them off and replaced them with Falkens a couple of weeks later.

They're cheap tyres - they'll behave like cheap tyres.

They aren't going to spontaneously combust and low grip can be fun on the track, but don't expect them to let you go around corners or stop as fast as decent tyres. I've never driven on a set of cheap tyres and thought "these are dangerous", I've just thought "these have less grip so I need to drive slower to compensate".

I have.
Interesting, what was wrong with them? Unpredictable grip levels?

I've never felt that low grip is dangerous (within reason), but I can see how completely unpredictable grip could be.

Have a look on camskill, you will prob get something much better for the same price.

i recently payed 35 quid a corner for some toyo T1R's in 185/50/15, which to me is a bargain.

From my experience they are not unpredictable - I ran them through the winter, snow, ice etc until I replaced them with premium tyres.

They were predictable, and well wearing from what I saw of them - they are budget tyres and ultimate grip levels prove this.

I would get falkens if I had to use a budget tyre, but if these are cheap and that's all you need then they won't kill you.

ETA: I survived in a straight 6 RWD car. It can be done. But I realise that the above make them souond ok - by comparison they were rubbish, but then they are cheap.

Would agree with this. Had a set on the front of an old Monedo I bought as a commuter hack a couple of years ago.

Biggest issue was that in anything other than perfectly dry conditions pulling away from stationary onto a roundabout etc. resulted in the worst wheelspin/axle tramp I have ever know. Replaced them with Conti's and never been an issue since.

Falken FK452's are the best "budget" tyres I have ever run. Had them on an 330i and never had any problems.

Wouldn't you be better off with a used brand tyre?

I've got them on my E60. They're worse than bad! in the wet the slightest of throttle will see the back shimmy, in the dry they are OK but very noisy as i think the compound is super hard.

Well I recommended them. I put Nexens on a mk2 polo and they are a perfectly adequate tyre.
