reading a db meter correctly

I`ve just purchased a nice decibel meter and would like some expert advice on which settings to use to measure the exhaust noise, the meter has A and C weighting, and fast and slow response, so if any track day veterans or circuit testers are on here I would really appreciate your advice.
I had a look on the links given on another thread for the msv site but no specific info available apart from distance and max reading per circuit.

living on the isle of wight its not to easy for me to pop along to a race circuit, as unfortunately there are`n any over here

Fast or slow doesnt make a deal of difference (1/5th of a second to 1/2), but Id use fast.

If its any use I recently used an iphone app to check the db of the car. I had already checked it in an enclosed enviroment (rolling road) with a proper reader but amazingly the iphone app seems to be pretty accurate, might be worth using both, worked for me as Bedford were happy.

Only up to about 100db.....above that the iphone can't read accurately
