Does anyone know of any moody looking abandoned petrol stations (or similar buildings) I could use as a backdrop for some photography? I live in Reading so would want something nearish there. Only one that springs to mind is the one on A4 near Burchetts Green, but it's not that cool looking. Any suggestions welcome!

It's a bit of a trek, and you might have to try asking for permission but the former USAF base at Upper Heyford might be worth a punt.

At the top of Newtown Road in Newbury. It's white with a green roof and a preservation order. It was a tyre bay most recently but is obviously a former filling station. It's currently empty and feeling a bit sorry for itself.

Geek Corner: it was the first garage in the country to have electric fuel pumps.

PM me for directions if you're interested.

There used to be one on the A5 between Hockliffe - Milton Keynes, not sure if it's been built on by now.

Here it is:

I know the one on Newtown road quite well. The rumour was that the guy who owned it last (when it was a used car dealership) scammed lots of people out of their money by taking deposits for cars and then doing a "Lord Lucan" how true that is I have no idea.

On a side note there is one on the outskirts of Berkshire technically its in Wiltshire it's just outside Froxfield on the A4 just past Hungerford look for an Indian called "the Palm" and it's right next door.

Although in Surrey, just north of the Hindhead Tunnel on the slip road to Thursley (sp?) there is a garage on your left. I'm on my phone so can't post a google street view link.

That's the Red Lion Garage. Not abandoned but home to Mathwall Engineering.

Also opposite the home of the lady who likes to video all the people doing tunnel runs. She's obviousley an enthusiast and would probably make you a cup of tea, while your clicking away.....

If your quick there is one on the A44 at Begbroke, was an Alfa repair centre but they moved out a couple of weeks ago but there are no pumps there just a forecourt and building.

That used to be A&B Tyres years ago, then became a car dealership but I know the guy Brian that runs A&B.

Trying to think about the place opposite, used to be the Fiat dealership - is that still an empty car showroom or have they done something with it?

That's being done up at the moment, according to a work colleague, his mates are moving their second-hand dealership there.

There's one opposite Maidenhead Honda on the A4 at Littlewick Green. Very close to Reading, that one!

Thanks for all the suggestions! Think I'll try the Newbury one first though as it's not fenced up (according to streetview anyway) and I need to get quite close.

There was one in a little village between wallingford and heading to Watlington, not far from Wallingford, if I remember correctly. It is on the road that you come from Wallingford bridge and I believe it is something like Drayton St Leonard. Was used in a film thriller I was watching one night and used as a location.

You'll have seen their old lorry, then? One of those cosy just post war trucks. Yes, okay, I'll check. Marvellous.

I'm assured by my in-house shopper that it was a furniture emporium but is now selling material and upholstery foam. It also looks increasingly less like a garage.

+ 1 for Upper Heyford

Its open access from the road and no one has a problem with people being there as long as you aren't doing anything stupid.

Mate of mine goes there reguarly for photoshoots
