I know some people say you can use pliers and I've seen dies available that you mount in a bench vice, but I'd like a proper handheld tool for the job. I was surprised to see a coax cable strip/crimp tool on the Vehicle Wiring Products website described as being suitable for crimping HT leads...

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinest...

How could the hexagonal form of the crimp effectively crimp HT terminals onto leads? Has anyone actually used a coax tool for this and does it really work well for the job?

All the actual crimp does is secure the metal part to the insulation to prevent them coming apart. It isnt actually that critical for electrical connection in this instance, although yes it is important.

I have their expensive tool, and when you get it right, it does an excellent job. But it is still tricky to use.

Anything that crimps it strongly will do though, as long as you arent going to be pulling on the ignition leads.

Pull apart an OEM lead to see what they are like, and how the electrical connection is made. You may be surprised.

and bare in mind the expensive tool is for 8.0mm leads only.

Go bigger and it just doesnt work that well at all.

The Coax tool may be more forgiving.

I have a coax crimp tool bought originally for coax, surprisingly enough. It does a tolerably good job with both 8 and 10mm ignition leads, but it's not the easiest thing to get right every time.

Ive also got a hex coax crimp tool (from my thin ethernet days....god im getting old) and it does a reasonable job on ht leads.
