This all started three months ago when I punched my staircase in anger and bust my hand. After numerous visits to the hospital and doctors and after 6 x-ray and diagnoses such as a bruise and a gangular, it has been found that I have broken the bone in my hand at the point where it meets the wrist and also dislocated it.

Now I have been given the option of going back after three months to decide whether to have an op to sort it or live with it. To look at, my hand has a lump on it where the bone is sticking out which i can live with but it's the pain, certain things hurt more than others, putting my hand in my pocket hurts and hand shaking is off the agenda. These are two things that I have to do in life and I look like a pussy wincing every time I do either. I'm told thta this will probably not get much better, nor will the bone just fix itself.

The operation is a bone graft to fuse the bone to my wrist. The doctor told me that I will loose some movement in my hand but not anything significant, mainly the clasping movement.

Has anyone had this before?

What do you think? To op or not to op?

The OP should have an OP. Should be worth it in the long run, is the answer you're looking for.

Why were you angry?

Seek a second opinion first, then if their views agree, take the operation route.

A bit of a discussion with mrs c led me to have a bigger falling out with my stair case.

I think the op is the way forward. Just a three month wait and then the wait for the operation.

I had the same injury about 7 years ago, the break not the dislocation. From punching someone too hard. Joint at the bottom of my index finger next to the wrist. I still have the lump where the bone healed, didn't have the op. I have no restricted movement that is noticable but did for a year or so, and various aches in the hand for 18 months afterwards.

Mine was the U shaped bone (name escapes me) cracked right through the middle.

Not sure if this helps but in my case I think not having the op was the right thing to do.

Maybe get a second opinion. No op worked for CB.... I've not needed any ops, other than tonsils as a kid, but go the impression talking to others physio and ops are nearly always the right thing to do, minimising the chances of ball ache in the future.

I wouldnt worry about the op, had a similar injury about 20 years ago and, apart from a small lump where bone fused curved, have had no issues.

Get it done.

It will get worse as you get older.

I broke all my knuckles on my left hand and a couple of fingers for good measure some years back, and wished i had have more work done putting it right. I have handwriting like a 6 year old, havent got the best sense of feeling through it, and when the weather gets cold, its goes a very strange shade of purple/blue, swells up, and hurts for a day afterwards.

ETA- not by punching something or someone stupid i should add

Look on the bright side, if you stay as you are keep your money in the pocket directly under the damaged hand, it could save you a fortune wink

Would make sense to get it sorted for the long term benefits.

People who punch inanimate (hard) objects are a bit mental.
I'm not sure if they do it to act hard (see!, see!, that's what I'm capable of. Don't push me! Don't push me!) or they are just a but dim.

hehe

OP, will you still be able to play the piano after this operation?

I agree with. I do t even know why I did it. I was pretty mad and I walk out the room and I just done it. I instantly regretted it as soon as I looked at my hand!!

I'll see what happens in three months and have the op if it's the same as it is now. I'll have a two month old by then so it will get me out of nappy duties for a bit!!
