280i 5 speed lube
Discussion
I posted a questions a couple weeks back asking about the lack of a drain plug on the 5 speed gearbox on my 84 280i. The replies stated it is normal not to have one. So, tonight I opened the fill plug mearly to check the lube level was correct.
To my surprise, the fluid level was fine but it was not the normal smelly 80-90 wt type gear lube. Instead, it was thin, had almost no smell and was the color of pea soup!
Is that normal? Did Ford use a special lube in the 5 speed gearbox during that time period? The car has been stationary for over 30 days, so it is not foamy. Rather, it was a uniform viscosity and color. But PEA GREEN!

An 84 in PA with a 5 speed box?
Spec for the US 4 speed is "EP Gear oil sae 80"
There are some red oils like SWEPCO, a synthetic for gearboxes, so I expect somebody makes a green one! There are also green dyes used in oil to find leaks. "Oil Glo" or something like that.
Or maybe somebody put power steering fluid in it
(basically a mineral oil with green dye.)
