Is it possible to buy a private plate from the DVLA through a ltd company and put it on a privately owned car?

why wouldnt it be? the Plate becomes part of the car so the owner of the car becomes the owner of the plate you fit it to.

I bought a plate and i could fit it to any car i want.

I'm just curious as the plate will be owned by my ltd company so just wondered if i'm then allowed to put it on a privately owned car or does it have to go on the company vehicle

Unless it's something to do with the company, no. Friend of mine has a registration that advertises their limited company, so he can claim that as company marketing expenses despite it not being owned by the company and on his private car.

But unless it's something like that - an approximation to the company name, for example - or on a company-owned car, then no, I wouldn't.

The tax man may be interested as to why it is on a private car unless you use it for business purposes.

We have private plates on all our cars and use them as part of our advertising and for recognition.

You are betting off putting this in the business forum. It could be argued that it could attract a benefit in kind tax.
