I'm considing purchasing a RRS soon and every person I have spoken to has mentioned 3.6 TDV8 is the only engine to buy. I was told recently that the V6 underpowers the car and isnt worth a to55. however my budget is reducing and I feel this is becoming my only option?

thought and opinions please, I have in the early 20's to spend.

From what I can recall the 2.7 is not much more economical and a fair bit slower. If performance in terms of speed is not an issue then nothing wrong with a 2.7.

2.7 TDV6 is a good motor but chalk and cheese compared to the TDV8.

TDV8 is a perfect match for the RRS but it's still a great car with the TDV6. With the TDV6, it's a great long distance tourer but can sometimes be a little sluggish when trying to pull out of junctions.

2.7 & Sport should not have been mated. The pick up is too slow. Hold out for a TDV8 or buy a proper Rangie with LPG

The only problem that I found with the 2.7 was turbo lag - and usually when you least needed it!

I test drove the 2.7 and all of my prejudice against the RR Sport seemed appropriate

Then I drove a TDV8
Stunning car

If you're used to Landy's, then the 2.7 won't feel slow. In SOTP feel it's as perky as a 4.6 V8 p38a and not really any slower.

You can also remap them. Sure the V8's, petrol or diesel are a lot more powerful. But it's hardly a race car and the 2.7 is still more than a match for 95% of normal traffic.

How many miles are you doing? Have you looked at the 4.4 V8?

no i havent my friend. i'm doing about 8k per annum but I would like the diesel. jus spoken to a LR salemans and his comment was 'the 2.7l isnt that slow. off the blocks the lag makes the car feel like your waiting however it is still good. the new 3.0l is much better.'

The 2.7 isn't slow - it's just the turbo lag that I found frustrating at times.

What about in s mode. Is it just the lag in getting moving or at higher speeds?

As this is the RRS I assume there is a n/a V8 option?

For 8000 miles a year at today's prices:

Diesel (auto) @ 27mpg average = £1832 or £153/month
Petrol (auto) @ 20mpg average = £2473 or £207/month

In terms of lag, this depends what you mean. Most people confuse lag with boost threshold, this is the point in the rpms where significant boost can be made. On petrol engines this is usually 3000rpm. e.g. below 3000rpm you'll not get boost and above it you can.

Lag on the other hand can occur at any rpm and is the delay that occurs when putting your foot down within the boost range of the vehicle, e.g. if we were talking petrol engines, then if at 5000rpm you floored it, there would be a slight delay before you boost. This is lag.

From memory, it was starting off smartish'like at lights etc or when putting your foot down to overtake. You just had to wait for a second or so for the power to kick in.

Otherwise, I like the two Sports that I had.

I've been test driving both for a while now and recently plumped for the TDV8. The TDV6 would be perfectly fine for most of my driving as it's a commute on the motorway, but the level of go from the TDV8 (and the V8 noise) sold it for me. It just seems absolutely perfect for the car. In saying that, for most people's driving, the TDV6 is perfectly adequate and civilised.

With the 2.7, there can be a bit of a delay when wanting to put your foot down. Typically, it's when you're trying to pull out onto a busy roundabout. If you want to split hairs, it has probably got more to do with the boost threshold, than lag... However, most people would describe it as lag.

The 3.0 is significantly better, due to the way the twin turbos work and overall the 3.0 has 37% more oomph than the 2.7.

I am used to fast cars but had an RRS with the 2.7 diesel engine for a weekend last year and didn't think it felt underpowered for the type of vehcile it is and didn't notice much lag tbh. Getting off the lights "smartly" was something that I never considered was important for a huge barge like this....personally?

Drive both and then make a decision?

It's only an issue when you need it for a fast overtake etc.

Otherwise I found the 2.7 perfectly fine.
