Does anyone here know what lubricant should be used in the gearbox and the diff as a top up. Is it EP80, EP90 or something else. Remember I am topping it up so its not a replacement. (no top up with 'Rusty' comments please).
When I get a chance and the weather is dry I want to take the Wedge to Pit Start in Park Royal. There I can rent a four post lift by the hour and top up the lubricants and sort out any other small jobs in comfort, but before I do that I need to gather all the info I need.

I'm sure it's the EP90 Tony, failing that you can us Rusty as it's just as heavy and once finished driving you can drain straight into bottle, filter it first then drink sorted so actually works out cheaper [does two jobs]. lol.

Check to see if it has an LSD, it requires a special oil for the clutch plates therein.

Gearbox oil is originally Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), yes I know it's not an auto but that's what BL/Rover used as shift quality was poor with normal gearbox oil. Some owners have used Castrol SMX instead and swear by it.

There's a LONG thread relatively recently on the whole subject.....

If the existing oil is ATF it would be red in colour right? but if its EP80/EP90 it would have a weird smell. How do I test for anything else short of going to a diagnostics lab?.

Agree with your lubricant ID methodology, I'd just drain the whole lot and fill it back up with whatever you're going to use.

I would drain the lot and refill with new oil, ive got ATF in the box when i serviced it a few years a go and EP90 in the diff.
I drilled an access hole in the boot to allow a long 1/2" extention bar to take off the filler plug but on the SEAC i would have to take off the rear section of the exhaust to drain the diff but i think the SE exhaust doesnt get in the way.
I would think of trying the Castrol oil for the box next time round to see if it can make a difference between 1st and 2nd.
not a hard job changine out oils

Castrol smx s is now syntrans same stuff new name I believe it's the same in the uk.
Dont bother topping up g box it will take you longer to ID the oil that in it than a drain an re fill.
I put the syntrans in mine and the difference is unreal.
Not sure about the diff, I put new oil in my old 350 diff years ago, it was a prickofajob, I used a long half inch pipe so the head of oil in the pipe was enough to push it through all the twists and turns, getting the plug back in even worse and I was a lot younger, slimmer and more nimble then.
Good luck.
