Another 'how do I' question I am afraid.

I am moving to a rural location with a long (1 mile long) private drive down to a complex of 7 houses. The complex is new but for years was a site for rearing game birds so all the local poachers and scallies know it. Talking to the existing tennats, they have considered gating the road to prevent scallies in cars getting too close at night (it is a march across ploughed fields and a lake on foot. Looking at the site we could put electric gates at the entrance to the complex but to be honest that leaves the scally in a car within 25 meters of the houses and he can hop into the woods and walk ariound the gates. Much better to locate the gates further up the lane and give them a 300 meter walk. But there is no electricity at that point.

It was suggested that we install an ordinary gate with a simple suited padlock, and the last one in at dusk shuts and locks it, with the first one out in the morning opening it up. Simples. But I think some of the lone women would be cautious about geting out of the car in an unlit lane 300 meters from safety.

Given that it only has to open at dawn and close at dusk, and perhaps open and close as the last few people come back at night, could solar do the job with a battery?

Ideas?

Found a solar kit and the better ones run an a leisure battery. May be ideal as the gate would not be used too much. Danger is the muppets damaging it as they did with a neighbour when trying to steal her milk.

You are looking forward to the snow aren't you... Nothing quite like trying to get a gate to open in the freezing cold...

I think that you should stop worrying about gates, generators and the like and worry more about living with your in-laws. All this looking into other things smacks of denial!!!!

I was looking at something along those lines, although I don't have a drive as long as that but it would still save me digging up the garden and drive to lay cables to the gate. I found that the Hormann RotaMatic Akku electric gate opener could probably do the job. It has a battery pack so does not need to be connected to the mains and it says the battery should last 30 days of 4 cycles a day. That is probably the number of cycles I'd do in a day but if you are sharing the drive with 7 houses then I guess it won't last 30 days. You can then either buy a second battery to charge up and swap over as required (each weekend perhaps?) or they also do a solar kit which might provide enough charge to keep the system running, although again I imagine that depends how many opening/closing cycles a day it needs to manage.

There is a brochure with the details in it I found here: http://www.garagedoorsuperstore.co.uk/uploads/pdf_...

Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on if you do get one or if you find any alternatives that I should consider!
