Good morning all,

I am thinking of getting a smaller front number plate and wondered what I can get away with "legally"?

Anyone got one and where did you go to have it made up?

You can't do it legally. It's either of the regulation size or it's illegal.

Morning Jim,

Legally - you can't get away with a smaller front plate.

An under sized plate would be £60 fine and 3 points if caught and prosecuted.

However the fine for not having a front plate is £30 (no points). I ran my old Chim with out a front plate for a year with the only problem being some petrol stations wouldn't turn the pump on as they couldn't see a no. plate on the car.

I've never had a problem with under sized plates though, had them on a few cars.
I'd go for a 3/4 size plate in normal font and style from www.fancyplates.com , at least it looks normal from a distance just slightly smaller.

P.S. How did the battery issue go ?

Mines small, not had a problem with it. My mate does the MOT's and I mentioned I was worried about the size of it, he said (not sure how correct it is) that new rules in place mean as long as you can read it it's not so much of a problem, my letters are the correct size just the boarder cut down.

I have a std looking 3/4 size plate on the front of the Griff, so far so good...switch back to the std plate for MOT and accept the risk that eagle eyed cop may take exception.

I have a Fancy plates 3/4 size on my car. Being a short number it doesn't look crowded and is as legible as the normal size plate. I've had two policemen look at the plate and both said it was OK and one was at a stop with an ANPR they where happy with it's legibility.

My MOT station turns a blind eye, I do have a full size plate in the boot but have never needed it (touch wood)

Some years ago, I spent a long time researching what were the requirements for a plate. As long as the characters are the correct size, correctly spaced, the margin around the outside of the plate is at least the minimum and both the BS number and the postcode of the manufacturer are showing, you can have any size up to the maximum. There is no set minimum size or shape as witnessed by the rear plates on Rover 75s etc.

I had my plate made up with a logo on the lefthand side and the characters mounted from the right so I could reduce the plate size as much as possible. The plate is legal and passes the MOT without question but one BiB who did not know the regs, pulled me. But you can't tell 'em, can you?

The minimum margin space from the letters/numbers to the outside of the plate is 11mm.
We've got a one number plate which helps as you can make it narrower and asked Fancyplates to reduce the margin to 12mm.
Can't see why you would want a smaller plate on a Chimp?

This.
If you are reducing the size to get more airflow to keep it cool you've got a bigger problem than numberplate size.

Got mine done at Craigsplates, it's fully compliant with legal requirements. The original number was the usual seven digit, so I went looking for a five digit, which I found on the DVLA website.

It might not be as small as you're looking for, but I think it's as small as you can get and stay legal (unless you have the money for a four or three digit plate)

ETA: yet to fill in and spray the original plate screw holes rolleyes

There is no points for have a dodgy plate just a fine, also you can cut the length of plate down as long as they are standard letters and numbers

I've run a front plate for 7 years with motorcycle number sizes.
Always passes MOT & never cause for concern by Police. I assume if you can read it why interfere.

I understand that number plate offences carry no points but both misrepresenting and failure to display are subject to £60. It's a personal choice sometimes considered a gamble!
