lottery "banger" 760il or s600
Discussion
Lets say you won the lottery and purchased a new bmw 760il or merc s600 as your run about - but used it as though it was a 500 quid banger you purchased.
Say you deciced, because you could, to not look after the car, never having it serviced, never cleaing it, ignoring warning lights and strange noises,
and generally treating it like a 500 banger. The only things you would do is top up the fluids (never a full oil change), replace discs + pads + tyres and MOT items.
how many miles/years less would the car do than a fully loved one? Would there be a massive difference, or no real difference in it's life span?

I'd spend your time thinking how you might go about making enough money to buy a new 760iL....Say you deciced, because you could, to not look after the car, never having it serviced, never cleaing it, ignoring warning lights and strange noises,

I'm engaged in a similar experiment with the OH's Punto (OK, slightly different class of car
) and so far it's still going strong after five years of complete neglect. I'm pretty certain that it'll eventually be the cam belt that kills it - it's already 10k miles and three years overdue.

Er. He wouldn't need to.
He'd just won the lottery?
What I mean is he needs to be thinking about something else outside (more productive) than this rather bizarre fantasy scenario. He'd just won the lottery?
I just find the proposition odd if I'm honest.
Its like saying - what if you bought a dog or cat and never fed it how long might it last???

No it's not, the equivalent of that would be asking how far he could go without petrol. It's more like asking how long a car or dog would last if he didn't bother with vaccinations. A builder I worked for bought a brand new Toyota Avensis. 1.8VVT thing, and basically used it as his works van from day one. It never got an oil change, got brake pads when it wouldn't stop any more, tyres when the air came out though the holes.
At 80k it eventually died. He put an engine flush through it, new oil and filter, and a set of plugs, and away it went. He wrote it off at 102k on black ice while towing a trailer. It was just under 4 years old, so hadn't been MOT'ed, so all he paid for in that time was a few sets of tyres, one set of pads, one set of plugs an oil filter and some oil.
That's cheap motoring.

and the horrendous depreciation that comes with buying a brand new car like that.... At 80k it eventually died. so probably not that cheap at all?
all depends if and what the insurance paid out I guess

Would need an MoT on its 3rd birthday. And taxing too. Plus depreciation, let's say £16k new and £2k (generously) as a 4 year old basket case (I bet the assessor pissed himself when he saw it). That's £14k in 4 years so £3.5k a year or just under £300 a month. That's not cheap. At 80k it eventually died. I've never heard of an insurance assessor checking the age of the oil. I suspect he'd get marked down for the lack of service history, but nothing else. treetops said:
Whatever....the OP question is bonkers IMO.
It would certainly be a daft thing to do, but I still think it's a fascinating question. As far as I can tell, only those who we pay to service our cars (or who in some way benefit from us servicing our cars), tell us that we need to service our cars.

Just go to Dubai and ask. What you have typed is generally how a lot of folk run their cars.and generally treating it like a 500 banger. The only things you would do is top up the fluids (never a full oil change), replace discs + pads + tyres and MOT items.

Not in N. Ireland, first MOT is at 4 years. He didn't tax or insure it either (this was before the tax database and ANPR). He scrapped it and bought another.
as I said.
Not cheap at all
Ireland you say huh
