Who knows which DS is the best option to get for young kids?

As the title says really.

I know nothing about them, but I need to buy 2. Ideally a pink one for our 3 year old girl, and another one for our 5 year old boy. They will be xmas presents, but given their ages they aren't going to be precious about getting the latest technology! I'd rather spend less and get a second hand one with games included, but am a bit worried that a more simple/ older model won't be compatible with current games on sale.

So far I have only tried ebay, which turns up DS, DSi, DS Lite, DS XL, 3DS

Any PHers in the know care to make a helpful suggestion please?

My choice would be the XL.

My neice and nephew love theres and the original DS just feels too small after playing with the XL.

With Kids wanting to draw and do less "gamey" things, the XLs extra size comes up trumps.

Not helpful as it goes against the last poster but I would get the ds lite as they are smaller and easier for little hands to use whilst still being big enough for a grownup to "borrow" after kids have gone to bed.

The 3DS is not recommended for under 5s (I think) as the 3D image can mess up their eyes a bit.

The DSXL might be too heavy for them, it makes my wrists ache and I'm 'powerfully built'

I'd go for the DSi for kids which are available in pink too

Thank you, I never thought of that being a reason for an XL. I didn't know they had things as simple as drawing.

TBH, I've never used a DS so I only know they have a dog game because the advertise it on TV!

Is the DSi a superseeded model, and if so is their new games available for it? I can see Rory seeing an ad on TV then realising it won't work on his...

Funny you should post this. I was just about to trade in my Black one and the Wife's Pink one. PM if you're interested. I'm sure we can do some deal for the pair if you want. Only reason we are selling them is we just dont use them any more and could do with the money.

Right, It's easier searching the web to compare 2 models than 5.

Based on the comments above, and what I have found, I think the DS Lite seems better suited. I don't think internet access or camera is a requirement for a 3 year old and they will need to have the same model.

Have you thought of iPod touch instead?

My 7 year old lad hardly plays with the DS since getting an iPod touch last Christmas, my two year old plays with my old iPod touch and loves it

It has saved me money as apps are alot cheaper than DS games.

I agree with this ref the iPod Touch, although I've also got my two boys 3DS's for Christmas.. largely as they were on offer recently in Toys R Us (£107 each)

We have an iPod touch, but it's an expensive toy to let them share.

Is there any designation of games that I need to buy for a DS. Obviously a 3D game probably won't work on a DS, but anything else to look for?

This ( http://www.play.com/Games/DS/4-/6036711/Peppa-Pig-... ) is branded Nintendo DS, but does that mean it works for all of the different models?
