I'm interested in a period house which has some sort of uneven painted surface, a bit like pebble dash with oversize lumpy pebbles. As I say it's painted out so had to say.

We like the house but aren't keen on the external finish.

Is it possible to render on top of this sort of surface to make it smooth, ready for re-painting?

TIA

Depends on the age of the house and construction method. It may need to be breathable in which case you'll have to use lime and breathable paint/limewash instead of normal cement render.

it would probably just as easy to hack off and redo. photo's would help massively smile

Thanks - photos possibly not so easily obtained until next visit. Early 1900's property, no cavity wall.

Yes you can render over pebbledash and I have just done it. I used this http://www.parex.co.uk/External_Walling_Systems/No... and the finish is superb. Its coloured already so no painting.

A few solutions are available it mostly comes down to how much money you are willing to spend for the desired finish, the through coloured one coat renders are really good. In order for these to be used the building would either have to be stripped back to bare-brick or 'dubbed out' with another coating to get the surface flat enough to recieve the new render.

Other way around it is metal lathe being screwed on to the existing cast and then a sand and cement scratch coat followed by sand and cement render, Would work out a bit cheaper but IMO the coloured one coat bagged renders are far superior.

We just finished a house in a monocouche (google it) honeycomb coloured render and it looks fantastic. HTH

It is applied either by spray machine or by hand, it really isn't a DIY job. Get professionals in to do it the material isn't cheap so it could and most probably would end up a pretty expensive mistake.

That'll be roughcast put on with a Tyrolean flicker gun. You wouldn’t want to put anything directly on top, but it's usually very soft and can be easily hacked off to the base coat render, which if you're lucky will be beautifully smooth - or hiding 100 years worth of botchery.

Thanks all for the replies, much appreciated. Just knowing at this stage that it's possible is all we need - cheers.

My house needed 100 bags (1.2m2 coverage per bag) plus various beads, total £1200 inc VAT. I then employed a render man for £1800 and he took 6 days working alone to apply it. To render and spar the house would have cost about £400 less and trust me the finish is superb.

I am presently looking to have a property rendered, and the general opinion appears to be "that time will tell" on these "new" finishes, and that one should stick with a sand cement mix.
