Jaguar confirm F Type is on hold - will it ever see the light of day?

Jag are incredible, they released the X-Type because they realised that there core demographic was getting smaller (see wrinklies purchasing agriculutural smallholding) and the car that would probably put them back on the map as far as late twenties early thirtysomethings crowd go they have halted development of.

Having registered my interest for this car last January, I was offered the opportunity last month to put down a 2,000 quid deposit on the car, price and spec. TBC. At that point I was quoted late 2003, early 2004 delivery. However, when I enquired further, my 2 grand would not buy me a build slot, which would be allocated on a first come first served basis at a later date. Funnily enough, I didn't really see the value in parting with my hard earned on those terms.
My local dealer has been really pushing the car though and had the prototype at its showroom a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps interest has not been sufficient to take the car forward, although I can't help wondering that if they sorted out their deposit policy, more people, like me, would be willing to commit to buying one.
Glad I kept my wallet in my pocket now.

I can't believe there's been insufficient interest from buyers...surely anyone in the market for a 2-seat sportscar would be interested in the F-Type?
However, I can't see the point of a dealer demonstrating the concept car - I mean, the production car was supposedly going to be a completely different configuration (ie mid-engined).
Perhaps Jaguar (Ford) should now do what was probably the obvious thing in the first place - create the F-Type using the new "small" Aston Martin chassis. That way it'll revert back to a front-engined design and R&D costs would be halved. Why they went differing routes on these two projects is beyond me.
Sounds like a few heads need to be banged together.

First sight of the show car, I applied to the wife for one (ha ha). The later sketches - I'm not too disappointed it's canned.
What is it with Jag; the whole of the enthusiast world goes weak at the knees with the XK180, the F-type, then they completely change it for the proposed production car.

I shall be asking for my deposit back as well.(two years' interest gone down the pan!)
Apparently although forward orders were very high in GB, Jaguar are suffering in the US and Ford are holding back investment funds. Wasn't the F-type going to be built in a new plant in the states?
Looks like that won't get built now.

I got my deposit back from the dealer today - I hadn't even asked for it! They implied that Jaguar was busy developing other models.
Mind you, judging from the latest artist's impression (above) the car I wanted to buy had been changed beyond recognition anyway. I really wanted an XK180, but apparently they only made two, so I expect they're about £1M each, even if they were for sale, which they're not.
So it looks like Griff 500 for the foreseeable future. I guess life's not so bad - and think of the money I saved....

. It was there for environmental testing so it's hard to understand how Jaguar can say that they've put it on the back burner...

From what I've heard thats exactly what you can look forward to. Basically the way I understand it at the moment is that Ford have some slight cash flow problems and I guess therefore don't want to spend loads of money on a new car at the moment.
