We are constantly told to eat five a day to aid healthy living. But who does?

I do, is it an urban legend that the true advice would have been 9 a day but the powers that be thought that would be far too unachieveable?

Garden full of veg means that I probably eat significantly more than 5 a day. Maybe not in the winter tho.

If I buy 5 bottles of Corona do the 5 slices of lime count?

Now, there's been a lot of misinformation about this subject and i feel this is the place to correct it. The following DO count towards your five a day....

Ketchup
Sprite
Hp sauce (but not daddies)
Lea and perrins
Tangfastics
Maoam strips
Mint clarnicoes
Supernoodles, specifically chicken
Pepper

Stupid patronising advice, which has now been replaced with "just eat more fruit and veg". You should eat lots of fruit and veg, and you should eat a wide variety of it, but there is no reason to eat a variety on any given day.

That's the better way to do it - fruit is full of sugar after all.

I manage about 3-4 portions a day on average I think.

I do now, in the form of a smoothie every morning.

1 Kiwi
Handful of Blueberries
Fresh pineapple pieces
Few strawberries
1 Banana
Splash of Fresh orange juice
Flax, Pumpkin and Sunflower seeds ground to a fine powder - coffee grinder
Tablespoon of low fat natural yoghurt

Blend together

Keep the Strawberries, Blueberries and Pineapple in the freezer - freezer bag.

Easy.

I very rarely even get close. Fruit juice with my lunch at work is normally about it!

I thought 5 a day was a myth, similar to the dont eat too much salt.

Salts good for you and if you completely cut it out you would die.

Fruit and veg is good for you and eating more is good but having to eat 5 a day to be healthy is a big misguided.

The message should be - eat a varied and mixed whole food diet and avoid eating too many processed and packaged foods.

Having fruit instead of sweets is good but instead of a piece of fish or nuts for example is just plain silly.
