Help! Fifth and Reverse Crunching
Discussion
Ive had my Tuscan for about three weeks now but just cant seem to get the hang of selecting reverse. Im aware of the lack of synchro and the previous owner whilst out with him had no problem as i recall.
Ive tried double declutching into fifth and back but even fifth seems to grind. It needs repeated selection and declutching before it will go in with no crunch. Pulling straight back into reverse from fifth occasionaly doesnt crunch but it too can pulling straight back from fith. All other gears go in and out perfectly.
Its almost as if the clutch is dragging or not completely dis-engaging as the crunching is obvioulsy the box still spinning when selecting fifth.
Any ideas or tips..

I've had this problem for a while. I found engaging 5th then slowly pulling it back into reverse did the trick rather then doing it fast and forceful. Saying that, the fingers on my clutch snapped a couple of days ago so it's in the garage having a new one fitted.
Thats another thing.. I cant seem to get it into fifth from a standstill with out doing some grinding.. Just scared now I'll be knocking metal off that fifth gear.Apparently there is a nut that holds 5th gear on and this can work loose or come off. This may be the cause of the problems selecting 5th. In my case I had the synchro and a couple of other bits replaced at a cost of about £600 including removal and refitting the gearbox. Maybe it would have been cheaper just having the nut looked at but as I guess you still need to take the gearbox off it wouldn't make that much difference.
As you said the lack of synchro on reverse means it will crunch if you go directly into it from neutral. The general advice is to go into 5th first, but I asked the guy who fixed my gearbox and he said to use 4th as it has a bigger synchro on that gear. Mine was always fine if I did this - if it doesn't help yours it may mean a clutch problem is developing?

I'll give fourth a go I'm begining to wonder if its a clutch prob.. I might contact the previous owner as it didn't do it for him. You should have no problem engaging 5th at a standstill, pulling back gently to reverse can occasionally baulk however. Go back to neutral, release clutch, 5th again and then back will sort it provided nothing else is array. HTH
Ok then im guessing the clutch might be on the way out as I have trouble engaging 5th at standstill. I have to repeatedly clutch and de-clutch to get it in fifth without grinding and it eventually goes in. Strange as fifth is fine when driving and theres no slip at all.The procedure for getting it into reverse without crucnching is neutral, first and then reverse. First slows down the shaft more than fifth.
Fifth is quite weak on teh T5 box which is one reson it's not advised to really boot it in fifth.
If you're having problems I'd suggest you've got a clutch issue.

Ah, not heard that before. Anyone else use this tip?
