I noticed when Paul Di Resta was being interviewed by Jake during qualifying he was still in his race suit and had his hand in his pocket.

Made me wonder, why the fk you would have pockets in a race suit worn by F1 drivers. What on earth are they going to put in them - except their hands during interviews.

I remember watching an Exige end up in flames while being driven by one of the EVO guys at the N24 last year, he had his phone on him when it happened so took photos and let his mrs know he was OK.

Guess it had to be somewhere?

That's probably more like it - 90% of the race suits to that pattern will be for gentlemen racers, who no doubt have stuff to put in pockets with them.

I think that was meant to be actually in the car.

Yeah, was rolled up in the cockpit.

I've accidentally left my phone in the pocket of mine and it annoyed the st out of me all race cause I was sure it was going to fall out. With a rubber case on the phone, would be useful for a VLM race etc for the reasons mentioned above.

You need it to keep the pen for signing autographs, to keep a tenner or two to buy a pint in the bar when you have to walk back to the pits when the car gives up in the race, or maybe to keep a couple of johnnies in there just in case you really like that grid girl (be careful in Brazil, or Indonesia....).....

I have a made to measure SFI/FIA suit, I didn't specify anything about pockets - and it has them - nicely made too. In face I can't remember having a suit made that didn't have them.

nope drivers dont have one . its in the car.

Its to get your cock out without having to take the whole suit off - they give access to underclothes (as in they go right through)

Map? Notebook? Pen? Earplugs? Keys?

Not everyone wearing a race suit is a F1 driver with a team of skivvys around to look after them.
must just be me that fiddles with the old chap then. This post was about F1 drivers, so keys aren't really a factor - but you make a good point nothing special about the suits in F1

I usually have a fiver in the pocket so I can buy a cuppa and a bacon roll when wandering around the paddock.

Well, they used to be for mechanics to slip spanners or lead shot in to post-race, to make sure the car weighed up... don't think they do that any more though!

I think Le Mans drivers keep phones with them during their stints, on Eurosport this year they mentioned Mike Rockenfeller (however you spell it) had called the guys in the pitlane to tell them he was ok.
