Current value of scrapped cars
Discussion
Long story short, have a Focus estate facing several hundred pounds of repair costs in order to get it through the MOT.
The car owes me nothing (bought very cheap and I've put a lot of miles on at zero cost) so I'm trying to work out the best way to dispose of it. One option is sticking on e-bay as a non-runner (or 'rolling restoration' as I believe the kids are now calling these), the other is to just cut my losses and just weigh it in.
My local scrapyard is closed on Sundays so can't just call them, but does anyone have any idea what the going rate for a scrapped Focus would be / current scrap rates per tonne ?
Alternatively, what's the best way to maximise value from a half-knackered vehicle ?

£90 a Ton at my local scrap yard. Up to £130 depending where you are.
Depending on the year I'd try ringing a few comercial breakers first as a sum of the parts kind of deal thay may give you up to £200.
Whatever you do sent the V5 off recorded delivery (see DVLA vs Liquid Knight).
If the engine's in good order it could be worth chasing up a couple of kit car threads as a Dura-Torque Se7en is as popular as a small block Zetec these days.

Cheers for the replies.
TBH I'm not too sure what needs doing yet, had a voicemail from my mechanic last night telling me it needed a lot of welding amongst other things and he thought uneconomic. I'm going to pick it up later this afternoon and he'll give me the full story.
Agree breaking it would probably be a better return but I'm off on holiday in three weeks and don't have much free time before then (tax and MOT expire whilst I'm away) so it's a non-starter.
I've looked at listings on eBay but trying to work out if I can drive it to my local yard next weekend and get the same price cash in my mitt without the hassle of people not turning up after the auction has ended with the cash (I know I could say paypal only).

Ebay 'spares or repair' with a 99p start. Collection only.
I guess you'll get about £150-200.
That's very similar to scrap value but more hassle. I guess you'll get about £150-200.
Firstly what is wrong with it how much is a working equivalent worth
Then how much to repair.
Of course if there are other things coming up it may be worth killing but if you have to buy another car it may be worth better te devil you know and fix it.
Sadly it's a 1.8TDI I would be interested in meeting an enthusiast who'd like to stick one of those into his project !
The cars been used by me for the past four months for a 160 mile round trip commute, I have another car but this offered better economy. Paid 300 quid for it so as I said it owes me nothing. On our return from holiday we're moving less than 20 miles from my office so no longer needed.
The body work is pretty shot (needs a new bumper and drivers door, not that this has ever bothered me) and it's hit 180k miles so it can't really compete with tidyer examples on eBay (similar mileage but better condition would fetch £600 top). So spending £300 plus £50 for the test plus the hassle of selling it doesn't really seem to stand up against weighing it in for 200 notes.
A shame as it's taken care of me over the past few months (and my mate for the three years previously) but hassle v cash seems to point toward the scrap yard. Cheers for the suggestion of a commercial breaker, I'll give them a call if nothing else. I'm also aware about the V5 thing but noted about special delivery.

You say £350 all in to get it back up and running plus you were happy with it.
Can you buy another car for that money ? If not seems a crazy choice not to do it.
Sure it may not be economical to do it but you know the cars history plus get this done and it will keep going for years to come.
Vs buying another car for £350+ then new issues turn up.

Very much agree, but the Focus has just been my commuter tool for a couple of months (not very clear from my earlier post) which I now longer need. Getting rid means I avoid insurance and road tax costs as well. Can you buy another car for that money ? If not seems a crazy choice not to do it.

Edit for speeling.
Try cartakeback.com. I got £150 for a Cinquecento through them. More recently got £120 for a ZX as I didn't have the time to go through cartakeback so just called one of the many 'SCRAP CARS AND VANS WANTED £££££' outfits.
I'd guess you'd get around £150. You could definitely get more on eBay (even shagged Focuses seem to fetch quite a lot) but it is more hassle.
