I am sure this has been covered but cant directly find an answer...

American Speed SBC - Probably like most Ultimas out there (Mines supercharged but expect that makes little difference). Use is mainly 'fun' road with possible occasional track or runway run.....and in 'normal !!!???' British weather.
My info from AS recommends no additives and not to use synthetic oil. Recommends to use good quality branded mineral oil 15w-40, 10w-40 or 20w-40 (and seems to suggest 20w-50 in temperatures above 60deg and 10w-30 below 55deg ??). I have been using 15w 40 (as was used on the dyno according to the AS delivery info).

So who is using what out there and with what results ?

Thanks

Stu

I use Joe Gibbs synthetic but they have a mineral alternative. extra zddp and anti corrosion additives. zddp is friction modifier not used in modern oils but good for older style engines particularly flat tappet ones. Anti corrosion good for engine that are not used for long periods.

Mine, originally AS 383, now rebuilt (twice) always had a roller cam, 21000 miles. Always used mineral oil 15w-40 and just change every 1500-2000 miles. When rebuilding I have had no issues caused by running this type of oil.

me too, these are old iron engines, need old type oil, 15/40 mineral - just change every year or 3k miles min (plus filter of course)I use cheap comma or similar . 30k miles, 12 years old, doesn't use any between changes.

I use comma 20 /50 supper diesel mineral , a very good quality oil which has detergents in to keep the oil clean and and prevent acids building up in the oil which eat into bearing sufaces when the car is not in use ( and as we all know most Ultima,s are not daily drivers )

Wonder why they don't approve of synthetic? Last I read from their owner's manual they advised no synthetic until break in had occurred. I'm using full synthetic in my AS engine but it has been had the bearing replaced once (low oil pressure briefly prior to dry sump).
Dart alloy motor if it makes any difference.
