Help with car suggestions
Discussion
My cousin has come to me for help with finding a new car.
He needs the following qualities: (I've lazily copied straight from his email)
Im looking for a car in the under £6k range,
-not too thirsty as I use my car a lot in traffic in london- I drive to work which my mates think is a bit 70s but I can park outside for free
-can handle potholed tracks in the country- my little peugeot 207 was not happy after a recent trip with lots of people in it- and we stay with friends in wales a lot who live on the side of a mountain
-room for a big ol' bell tent which we use a bit in the summer (takes up whole boot in my 207)
-good motorway cruiser
- doesn't have to be an estate but more space=good in my book but if that were to seriously affect fuel economy I could definitely live without
Any help/suggestions I would be really grateful.

In all seriousness, if he's spending a lot of his time in London traffic, not a lot will be more economical (not to mention quieter or more relaxing to drive) than a Prius. Previous-gen on 06-07 plate for his budget, maybe a bit older for lower mileage. There's plenty about and pretty cheap as they're no longer congestion-charge exempt - existing owners keep the exemption for a short while longer but anyone regularly going into the zone will be changing for a newer one.
Boot is a lot bigger than Astra, Golf, Focus, etc despite the batteries. Roomy enough with passengers too. They cruise on the motorway fine, and ride well on broken roads too. Cheap to insure too, which is always a plus in London.
Else that money will get you into an earlier current-shape Civic, I've had one for a few years and it's been great. Boot is enormous, very practical at carrying stuff and OK on the motorway. Ride is crashy though and if you're using it in London traffic all the time, don't expect more than 35mpg out of the diesel one.
