Hello

I have just been given this by my Dad, not sure if it should be any good or not? It is at least 20 years old as he remembers winning it as a prize but that is about all I know, there are no dates on the bottle.

Can someone please enlighten me.

I never tried port till this year when I recieved a bottle for my birthday! I have no idea what that bottle will be like but cant really go wrong!

What ive learnt so far is that £10 will buy a really nice bottle, lidl sell some rubbish at £5 and tesco do a good one for £6.

Dive in! and if you dont like it - put it in the post to me!

Well, as a non-port expert, I guess you can either stare at it or drink it, whichever gives you the most pleasure...

I do enjoy Port and will certainly be drinking it... Just secretly hoping it was worth a few hundred quid biggrin

It does have LB on it, is that a good thing?

Looks like 'LP' to me. Have you tried playing it?

A couple of years ago we found two very special bottles of Port at my Grandfather-in-law's house when we were cleaning the place out after he died. 1963 Sandeman's and a 1975 Colheita. Eventually found out they were worth around £130 and £150, respectively. But very hard to sell unless in a case of 6.

In the end we drank them at Christmas. They were bloody lovely.

I'd get that drunk, asap.

There's no vintage, therefore it's unlikely to be of any great keeping quality. Could well be over the hill already.

Just had a look and it appears tonhave a fair bit of sediment, including some big bits....

Gonna let it stand over night and then hopefully crack it open tomorrow eve, this also leaves time for some cheese shopping Nom Nom Nom.

It'll be LB, for Late Bottled.

This link will give you a brief overview of what that means: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_wine#Late_bottle...

Unlikely to be any merit in hanging on to it much longer...

Actually visited the Noval Port house a few weeks back; tried some excellent ports including a 40yr old Tawny and a 1980 vintage.

As others have mentioned the LB will almost certainly stand for Late Bottled Vintage; although you'd usually expect a year on there as well.

Let us know what it was like :-)

Sediment is good. Just make sure its stood long enough to settle (can be a few days). If its too cloudy, decant through a muslin to remove the sediment but pour slowly and stop when the main sediment starts to come out (often the bottom 1/2" of the bottle)

There is no date so its unlikely to be a specific vintage, meaning its the producer's standard issue bottle - most ports are pretty good but some are very special.

1963 is expensive now, 77 is more drinkable and 83 a bit cheaper and not much difference unless you're being really snobby about it.

Get some cheese, crack open the bottle and make an evening of it wink
