Had a nice day out in St Andrews today and on the way back the OH was driving along a single carriageway. A car two in front was going quite slowly so the BMW in front decided to overtake on a blind bend on a hump with the sun in his eyes (The OH had just commented on how awkward the sun was). Unsurprisingly, being a busy road, a car was coming the other way. The BMW ended up in a field and the other car was badly mangled. Called the police etc and then set about helping the old couple in the back (there son was driving) with the help of some other kind motorists. The BMW driver and his passengers were all uninjured. Looks like everybody will be okay but could have been a different story if it had been a full bore head on - more to do with the fact they were newish cars with lots of airbags and crash protection. I was amazed that when police called back they knew all the details of the BMW - seemingly it sends a message when the air bag went off!

When the dust had settled and the police had taken statements I really wanted to go up to the driver of the BMW and ask him what his thought process was that concluded it would be a good idea to overtake on a hump/bend.
complete tw@t.

I strongly suspect the police will be asking him that very same question, and in a couple of months the magistrates will be considering his answer. I take it the police had your details as a witness so you can tell them how bloody stupid you thought this overtake was?

Only if I know there's nothing coming the other way.

How do you know there is nothing coming round a blind bend?

An FYI, always beware on bends in Bulgaria, as you can find all manner of things coming at you in your lane! smile

Quite possibly the same line of thought that was in the brain of the new shape personal plate black 5 series driver that stayed in the outside lane of the A127 for six miles today, braking for each AVERAGE speed camera and speeding up each time I pulled back into the inside lane as a gentle hint that it was free. I said to the wife the only time he would pull over was when he needed to take an exit. I was wrong...he suddenly braked and pulled left when he realised that he had to look closer AT HIS fkING MAP THAT WAS SPREAD OUT OVER HIS fkING STEERING WHEEL.
Utter utter .

That's one of the features of BMW assist.
My car's got it, along with a little "SOS" button in the headliner.

BMW assist advanced eCall, if you're interested in learning about it. It's cleverer than it sounds - it grades the severity of your accident, for example - how many occupants, which airbags deployed, if the car rolled over, etc etc.

No doubt he couldn't afford the extra 10 quid a month.
