VIN number irregularity - possible it could be a typo on V5?
Discussion
Guys, following PH rule #1 I'm in the process of buying a lovely NB MX5 for my dad. However, I've stumbled on a VIN number problem right at the last minute. V5 VIN passed HPI with flying colours, but VIN on the car and every single receipt for the last 10yrs is different by one digit. And it's not in the last six digits that are car specific but the earlier figures. Car says JMZNB18P600******, but V5 says JMZNB19P600******. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I read the car vin as Japan, Mazda, NB1, 2 seater, 1.8, 6 speed, hiroshima plant. A 9 instead of an 8 makes no sense given 8 = 2 seater. Now, this car could not be more straight, truly. So, I guess someone at the DVLA has screwed up transcribing the vin. Any thoughts? Similar experiences? Common problem? Fixable? Will phone DVLA when they open, but assume they'll be coy given I don't own the car...
I wouldn't put it past the DVLA messing something up. I sent off my V5 for a change of address only, and miraculously my car had changed from being a 4 door saloon to a 5 door hatchback on the V5 in the process
Best get in touch with the DVLA about it though, as otherwise there may be inurance complications if the numbers don't match.

Pretty much certainly a typo. Is the car an import or a UK supplied car? There are often mistakes with imports. The vendor will need to send them proof of the correct number. Eg. a photo of the VIN plate and a letter from a Mazda dealer or (recognized specialist) confirming that the "9" must be an "8".
They do take a few weeks to re-issue the V5C though.
