New Stratos Vs. Classic Stratos On Video

YouTube comparo - you decide...

Eek... We thought we loved the New Stratos. In fact we knew we did, at least until this morning when we saw these two videos on YouTube.

The flicks were filmed at a Rally Legends bash in San Marino by one of YouTube's star turns 'marchettino', and feature several original Stratos HF rally cars with (and we quote) 'LOUD sounds'.

So is it just us, or do those raspy Dino V6-powered originals do things in a way that make the throaty V8 rumble and contemporary styling of the New Stratos look and sound a little bit, well, less awe-inspiring? Or maybe it's just that the original Stratos inspires so much love that its light will never dim...

That's 'classics' for you, eh? But still, like us, we're guessing you'll not be kicking the New Stratos out of your fantasy garage for its throaty tailpipe noises!

so nice to see all those different colored classic Stratos, but still i would take the new one every time...could not hear the sound very well from the new car though...

the oldies sounded good but also a bit like a wet one so to speak....

The new one looks great but the sound is poor. Give me an overheating unreliable original any day! That noise!!

'Legendary World Championship winning Rally tool' versus 'Very rich chap's conversion'.

They are both great, in their own way, but I'd have an Alitalia original in my fantasy garage, please.
I still have the model of Sandro Munari's Monte Carlo winning car from my childhood.
Stiil amazing to watch how he and his peers drove those cars!

TBH the German one's not fit to share the same tarmac as the real ones. Isn't it time that people focused on designing new shapes of cars, rather than cynically harking back to the designs of models from yesteryear? (eg. BMW Mini, VW Beetle, Ford GT, BMW M1 & Miura concepts, all those copy-cat yankee muscle cars around these days etc. etc.)

So those old ones are still using the standard exhaust are they?

I'm sure the new one would sound just as awesome with a non-standard exhaust. It sounds pretty good already.

I love the look of the new one, and as a V8 it sounds great. But the originals sound much better!

That second clip brings back memories. I used to live a couple of hundred yards down the road from The Chequered Flag. smile

I think the problem with new shapes for cars, is that most of these new shapes simply aren't as good as the old ones (except perhaps aerodynamically). Car bodywork design peaked years ago from an aesthetic standpoint (I'd say mid to late sixties to very early seventies for cars with sporting pretensions) and has largely gone downhill since.
We already know which styling cues look good, but unfortunately they now rarely get used (or can't be used - The pop up lights on the Stratos for example, or the blunt nose and quad circular headlights of a muscle car).

So for those complaining about rehashing designs of 'yesteryear', yes I agree that there is no need to try to re-imagine an existing car, but there should be nothing wrong with designing something like a beautiful, long nosed, clean lined, fastbacked coupe that takes its styling cues from an age when cars were beautiful and purposeful.

I look at the ranges of new cars available and even though many of them are very capable high performance machines, they do absolutely nothing for my heart and soul. I doubt many will be remembered for long in the same way that an E-type Jag or 60's Aston are for example. You have to look good to truly become a desirable classic, the original Stratos being a case in point - its looks are what initially attract, the performance and achievement just re-enforce its coolness.

Prohaps the guy in the black one had to drive it home so he didn't bruise it.

looks were where similarity ended....the originals could dance....and lm pretty sure the weight didtribution of the new one would not anable it to be quite so poised no matrer how you tried to make it replicate the originals nimble moves....nice try...but you are only going to buy a new one for the AC

Give me the new one as I reckon I could use it very day as a road car, looks stunning in black too.

the old one sounds better. The Busso designed V6 comes closest the that sound.

How can you compare the sound of a pure racing car with one made for the road on any terms? They are made for completely different use.

If an original classic road Stratos was there too, there might be an arguement and a fair comparison.

+1

I have been saying this for years now, as much as I like the new mini, dont like the new (gay) beetle, like the new Fiat 500, and all runaway sales successes to boot; it's a sad inditement of modern car design (sic). It appears euroboxes are universally dull to look at, so many of us hark back to the prettier (although less slippery, less pedestrian impact friendly) cars of yesteryear.

Re the new Stratos; not sure why anyon would bother when a Hawk Stratos is so much closer to the real thing at a fraction of the price???
