The back boiler recently went on a friends rayburn and started leaking they had it disconected from the water tank up in the loft which of coarse stopped the leak, but as its an old rayburn so is uneconomical to fix.
But as the weather is now starting to get cold again they want to know if its ok to start up the oil fueled rayburn with no water in the back boiler?

So how much would it cost to fix that would make it uneconomical?

Have you contacted Aga/Rayburn with your query about running with no water?

I may be talking bks, but I overheard someone talking about a similar situation with a multifuel stove with a knackered back boiler. They were talking about filling the heat exchanger with sand.

Just a thought!

I have an oil fired Aga which was heating the water but not well as furred up. Was disconnected and the water in the water jacket simply boils off, no problem. But the Aga man who services it said it would use less oil if the water jacket was removed and additional insulation (vermiculite type stuff) added to fill the void
