Recently watched the movie, and started reading up on him and his books etc. His initial theft of a few quid, seems to have escalated out of all proportion. Apart from chinning a lot of HMP staff (out of boredom presumably), he doesn't really seem that bad a guy, and currently seems to be allowed very little communication with reality or the outside world.

He's not someone I'd openly pick a fight with, but does he really deserve to still be in nick, and will he ever be released?

Discuss.

I doubt he will ever be released, as AFAIK he is considered too dangerous. Didn't he kidnap a prison guard in one nick he was in??

He has kidnapped several people and has caused 250k damage to a prison roof (the most a prisoner has ever caused) and spent so much time in solitary that he cant go out in normal light without glasses..

I read his biography a while back, id happily have him released. His original crime was robbing a post office of £2 with a fake shotgun..

There have been many hostage taking incidents, violence, smashing places up, but they've all been aimed at HMP staff and facilities, in the real worlds he's done very little indeed.

He now seems to be beyond the point where he can demonstrate his ability to make a fresh start. Shame as I've read about some good work he's done for charity etc.

He should be released, a waste of so much money keeping him there.

His behaviour inside rather precludes him from being considered for release.

He clearly doesn't want to be let out.

So if you're going to do something terrible, do it in prison, or to a prison guard. Then you can point to a good record in the 'real world' as your reason not to go to jail (where, as is evident, you make bad things happen).

Based on what I know of him (not much) I don't think he actually does want to be free, whether he admits it or not, he's utterly institutionalised.

Hasn't he been relised once or twice since he was first sent down for the robbery and re-offended quite quickly?

£750k.
Thats part of the dark appeal, as a complete waste of tax payers money, that he was able to do that sort of damage, makes a mockery of the system he's stuck in.

I'm not saying its big or clever, and I'm sure was traumatic for staff, but for one individual to do that.

Again this was all inside though, on the outside he's done very little.

Cheers,

Wiki says he was sentenced to 7 years in '74 for the original robbery, actually spent 14 years inside for being a nasty bugger.

Imprissoned again for robbery 4 months and 9 days later and stayed inside until '92 released, and imprissoned again for planning a robbery and sentenced to life in 2000 for another riot / hostage situation.

A lot of his supporters and fans like to mention he's been in prison since '74 for the robbery of a small amount of money using a fake gun, but it's not even slightly the case. If that was all he had done he would have probably been out in '77 / '78, the rest of the time is because he's a very, very violent man.

PR from the film and books aside, he's a nasty bit of work.

Would you like him living next door to you? drinking in your local? hanging about outside your kids' school?

No, me neither.

He hasn't. But he is a proven kidnapper and thug. Isn't that enough?

(yes, I know, only when he's upset...)
