Had my Chim for coming up to a year now, so it's renewal time (whoo-hooo!). Did the calling around to all the usual suspects, and still can't beieve how massively their quotes differed!

Anyway, for those you are interested the quotes were as follows:

Peart: £1814.50 (renewal) - £500 XS
A Mannings: £1662 - £550 XS (plus 10percent off for Ride Drive)
Permance Direct: £2800 (WTF??)
Direct Line: £2007
MSM: £1251 - £300 XS
Sunninghill: £1158.10 - £500XS

This is on a 1998 4.5 Chim, I'm 29, 8 years no claims (protected), no points, 1 non-fault claim in Dec 2003 (full recovery), living in central London, parked in a secure car park, 12K miles a year.

The Sunninghill one is the only one that accepted my 8 years no claims (had to ring my old insurance to get them to prove it - why do insurances only give proof of 5 years, unless you ask for it??) They also do track cover. They are using a new insurer now - Chaucer. Anyone had any dealings/issues with them?

The next best one is MSM, insuring with NIG (Royal Bank of Scotland) - cheaper excess, more expensive premium. Anyone had any dealings with this lot too?

At the moment I'm just chuffed to get it down to nearly £1K - last year was £2K!! In fact, if I go for Sunninghill, that will be cheaper than my last year of insuring my MX-5 2 years ago!!

Any tales of experience/advise is very welcomed.

Cheers,
Ropey

Ropey,
Try Tesco - they were by far the cheapest for us.

Tried them too, but they only do 5K miles max. Not much good as this is my only car.

Also need to ring Cheam back too - they were supposed to call me back, but that was 2 weeks ago!

I've just told msm that they have my business for my renewal. Seemed very easy to deal with and they have had a few good reports on here. Cheapest for me by a fair bit.
No track days though.
I tried L-V who are supposed to be good but they don't insure you till you are 30.

Just had to increase the mileage on out Griff, from 5000pa to unlimited mileage, £45.40 from Pearts. Very nice and helpful, thanks!

A couple more for you all:

Adrian Flux: £1797
Cheam: £2000

Unless anyone gives me any negatives for Sunninghill/Chaucer, I suspect I shall be giving them my money this year.

Cheers Jeremy.

I notice that you are in the Insurance game. Would your company be able to give me a better quote?

Ropey...I'm with Direct Line and I have to admit that I'm surprised at their quote of £2000 for a 29-year old with 8 years NCD. I can only assume they rate you high risk living in central London and therefore aren't really interested. I think I'll check that their renewal quote for Trev (due later this year) is still competitive although I did do this recently with my other car, an Audi A3, and it was the same as Tesco's.

Hi Roz,

Haven't seen you for a while - hope you're well?

Insurance seems to be a total mystery to me - how they can differ so wildly is bizarre! Nearly a £2000 difference from the highest to the lowest is just crazy!!

One of the musts of me buying the TVR was that the insurance went down to something more reasonable in the second year. I started to panic a bit when I had my renewal quote.

Ah well, unless something presents itself in the next few days, I shall be going with Sunninghill.

Any plans for another Brighton Burble in the near future, or have you given up the organising after last time? Shame I missed that one - but as I was skiing I wasn't too upset.

See you soon.

I'm fine, thanks Ropey

Big_Al is planning a meet in Sussex, hopefully in July, but not in Brighton (it'll be too busy). You're more than welcome to come along. Just keep your eye on the Events forum in the near future. Alternatively, I'll keep you posted.

Don't let the renewal quotes put you off keeping your P&J...

You could always move out of London if necessary although perhaps that's a bit radical!!

I used these guys www.elephant.co.uk. For a 35 year old living in Harrow with 28 year old GF on a brand new Tamora it was £1096. They were the cheapest by £300.

Cheera Guys and Girls.

Elephant - £2390

Isn't Privilege the same as Direct Line, the same as Tesco? If so, I've already tried Tescos, and they were £1900ish.

Diamond........errr, I think not!

Roz, I think the suggestion of moving out of London may well be the only option. Would also mean that I could get straight onto some decent roads, rather than having to sit in traffic for an hour when I try to enjoy my P&J!

Ah well, maybe in a couple of years.

I guess £1150 isn't too bad for Hackney.

Thanks for all your help and advise, peeps.

Roz - I'll keep an eye out for the run in July. If you don't see a reply from me at the time - can you drop me a mail? Many thanks.

Cheers,
Ropey
