If the fuel companies were that worried about fuel theft they'd have fitted 'pay first' pumps like they've had in the US for yonks.

Instead we taxpayers are paying for another massive waste of police resources. mad The oil companies should be paying for fuel security, not us.

The fact that we are paying for these police operations is winding me up. The fuel companies could stop this fuel thieving in weeks by changing their pumps to the type that only work after you've lodged your credit card or lobbed up some cash. The Govt should be focusing their attention on the oil companies not the backstreet operators.

How about that white fuel tanker that was stealing it direct out of the pump tanks? Talk about thinking outside the box! Ingeniuous!

Totally wrong of course, but watching that did make me laugh!

The site that they bought the cheap diesel from and then shut down is a couple of miles up the road from me. Started off as a car wash and been selling fuel for about 6 months. It's on a very busy main road so wonder why it was allowed to stay open so long?

I've got family in Northern Ireland, one of my cousins was talking about some new houses built down a road near him.He said that they'd started referring to the area as "Dallas" because the owners were all oil millionaires

Yup, we live in a country where a bloke can sell fuel for c.80p/litre and still make a tidy profit because the remainder is all tax. And people call him the thief!

Now, when tax was so high on alcohol that smugglers were running booze, taxmen were being shot trying to enforce the law so the government reduced the duty on alcohol and made smuggling not worth the risk.

It is a well known phenomenon that the cost of a commodity will get to a certain point before generally law abiding citizens will step outside the law to procure said commodity without huge cost.

It is time to make some changes, high costs are affecting honest people and tempting them into less than reputable activities.

what made me laugh was when the treasury (iirc) said that if it wasn't for a package worth 1.9billion petrol would be 6p a litre more expensive. yes that's true, but it's only because the thieving bar stewards never implemented more tax rises, they haven't actually made it cheaper, just not made it more expensive.

christ on a bike how do people swallow this crap!?!

That'll never happen as it means the punters will not have to enter the shop and that is where the real money is made. Believe it or not there is no money to be made in retailing petrol.
