Hi All
The mrs is due to give birth with our first one at the end of Jan and to be honest I'm a bit paranoid about her popping in the middle of a nasty snowy spell, which our E46 330 tourer was shockingly bad at dealing with last year. So I'm thinking a cheap 4wd to hack around the winter in might be just the ticket.

Criteria - no more than £3k ish (bangernomics is good!), 4wd, preferably manual.

That's it! Anything from modified Disco's, quattro's, Scoobies is all fair game.

Over to you guys.

Can you not trade in your current car and get a good example of a 4x4 vehicle fitted with all-season M&S tyres rather than going for something cheap and risking large bills to repair it?

Or just go for a good set of winter tyres and snow chains.

I bought a cracking Audi A4 1.9tdi Quattro Sport Avant for just over £4k last month (has a few gaps in stampbook recently). I had the same with my old 328ci, it was utterly useless!

Jeez, the man has concocted a watertight reason for indulging in some off road antics and you're suggesting winter tyres? Shame on you both.

Get it bought.

I know this is the sensible option, but I guess I'm looking for an excuse to buy something cheap and fun!!

This and snow tyres would be pretty decent. My parents have had one for nigh on a decade and it's never needed anything doing to it.

I think he was hoping to use it on-road, as well?

I've no experience of Rav4's - any good? An old bosses wife used to drive one, so have a bit of a hairdresser feel about them! Looks good from that angle though.

If you can find a Forester XT in budget, you've done well. Hilarious performance!

Currently under budget, a manual one, this sort of thing

Crikey, that S4 Avant is cheap! You'll want winters for that too though, mine was useless on summer low profiles.
