Seems that one of the fire trucks at work today got a little too close to my 280i. It appears to only have ripped a 3 inch gash the corner rubber front bumper cover and left a 6 inch paint filled scrape on it (early wrap around Federal style). Problem is the response I got was to get 3 estimates. How do you get an estimate on replacing something which they don't make anymore and there is a definate lack of spares in usable shape. One that was on there was probably a 7 out of 10 but it was solid and presentable. Now I do have a spare in the basement but it would need quite a bit of work to be made to fit as it has a completely different substructure and lacks any structure on the sides. Just want to be fair to both me and the fire department. Ideas?

Were you driving the fire truck? smile

Assuming you have some sort of collector car assurance on it, they are usually assured value.
That means, for example my 280 in the current market is worth maybe $5K, but my policy is for $13K. I question this and was told it has to be that high because if it needs to be repaired we want to make sure it has enough coverage.

So....go to a shop, give them the telephone number of TET in UK for the bit needed and take it from there. Or you could allow them to write it off if the price is right and buy mine.

Or...look for a body shop that has a few old Corvettes outside (C3s), they should be able to do a decent repair.

No I wasn't driving the fire truck. smile

Yes I have agreed value insurance but it isn't even going to my insurance, the party at fault would be stuck with this bill which just so happens to be my employer.

It is one of the early Federal bumpers (i.e. rubber not fiberglass. Rubber really isn't fixable unless you're painting it (which I don't want. TET doesn't make a rubber federal bumper anyways so they aren't much help. I'm probably the 1 in 20 who actually prefers this style bumper so I won't be going to the later non wrape bumper (besides I have 2 holes in the side of the "fender" for where the bumper bolts through now and would need to repaint quite a bit if I went that route.

I wouldn't even dare write it off. It could be the most rust free 280i in existance. smile
