Just got a 3k bonus from work and looking for a 4x4 for the winter. I've been looking for about two months now and had my heart set on a freelander td4 but my mate is trying to talk me out of it saying reliability would be an issue. Does anyone had any td4 experience or could recommend a good 4x4 for the money?

don't buy a Freelander, go slightly older and get yourself a Disco. If you can tolerate the fuel consumption you get a lot more/newer car for your money with the V8!!..I ran a 1995 Disco V8iES last winter, had done 100k miles when I bought it (private plate, fsh, air-con, cruise, twin electric roofs, leather seats, 7 seater, sidesteps, roofrack & towbar)..paid £650 for it and had to replace the alternator shortly afterwards for £80, but then it ran all through the winter without issue and I sold it (regretably) in the spring for £1400!..a lovely old hector..

getting a good mechanical cover a good idea though just in case, I have AA cover on all my cars out of manufacturer warranty..including breakdown cover less than £20 a month and a lot of reassurance with an excellent level of cover..
