Just wondered if any of you parts hoarders have one of these kicking around that you may exchange for beer tokens before I take my chances on a well known internet auction site..?

Thanks,

Martin.

+1,
I bought a couple cheap off the auction site, one was for an SD1 the other a classic Range Rover - neither will run my 390 anything like correctly but I bought them to play with and learn from so it is not a problem to me.

I'm still looking for a broken one I can take the connector from, to make a piggy back board so I can put a data logger onto it.

Thanks Andy, have check back when I get home from work.

And no, I wasn't aware that they were all different, thanks for letting me know before I wasted money on the wrong one!

Rover SD1 should be fine for a 3.5 though.

Hi

Both of mine are 4CU, as I said I have two one is a used but a good ecu, it even has a 350i series 2 wiring diagram on it. It was tested on no 1 late last year as was found to be OK!

Now the other ecu is a remanufactured one which has been sealed in it's packaging till I tested it again last year on no 1 and as you would expect it's good!

I am open to sensible beer token offers on both!

I've got loads of 'em, including a rovertec adjustable, do you know the part no' of the one you want?
Hi.
Thanks for that, I'll be in touch if nothing comes of the first offer I had from Andy.

I'll find the part number tonight.

Andy, I've sent you an email.

Thanks all.

I'd like to join the queue for that please. Does it have a little dial at the side?

You'd think so but as I said, they're all different. There are slight component value differences between units even with the same part number, to match the ECU to the airflow meter, so whilst another from an SD1 may be a close match you may still find running issues.

Nobody has ever explained to me precisely what 'remanufacturing' a 4CU involves. I have one with a similar label to yours and there is absolutely NOTHING about the internals that looks to have been changed. I'd expect to see at the very least a full set of new capacitors but everything is original and untouched, the soldering is uniform and original and the anti-moisture lacquer undisturbed, which is impossible if anything had ben resoldered.
I suspect some bullsh!t (not on your part Andy... well at least not this time wink)

Ian

You cheeky (son of unm_ _ _ ed parents) remind me not to stand around you when you move your feet just in case of the bullsh!t

It's interesting that you could not find any thing replaced inside your ECU, could it be they had replaced it all?

Who knows!

I have seen a couple of re-manufactured units which have an entirely new digital board replacing the old clockwork electronics. Its about half the size of the original pcb, and there is only one of them.
Funnily enough I have one of those, didn't buy it as 'remanufactured' though, maybe the seller didn't know there was anything different about it. I used the chassis and connector for another injection tester that I'm building; I'd worked out it was pin-compatible with the old ECU but wasn't sure why someone had gone to quite elaborate lengths to make a new design for an old system.
Any idea if the new design is re-mappable or whatever?

Sounds a bit like those "Re-manufactured" steering racks that have had nothing more than new bellows and a coat of paint....

Mind we use the term "re-manufactured" at work and it's debatable.... more a case of "repaired" with a manufacturers warranty, but "repaired" don't looks so good on the label !!

Thanks, Martin.
There are choices and each will effect your performance.

If we forget the early TR8s and the Adams modified units there are three you can use, each having different Ferranti chips fitted to them for different priorities.

The best fo you is one designed for the Rover Vitesse engines (1983 to 1986) and used by TVRs, Morgans etc... It bears serial number 83986. It is a linear fueling map that provides good power right across the rpm range.

Then you have 84477 used on those big heavy Range Rovers from 1985-1987. As you would suspect is has a fine low and mid-range, but falls down at higher rpms (over 5000).

Lastly, there is 84941 which is is decent enough. Better at mid and high rpm but not as good as the 83986. Numbers are the label on the ECU.

It is the same for the 14CUX units. (which are useless for a Flapper). There is only one (rarish) 14CUX ECU "carcass" (amongst many) that were made for sports cars and their chips.

..and every example of each version is STILL all different. Yes, the base calibration is roughly OK for each one but you could take two pefectly-running 350i's, swap the ECUs and you'd notice variations in the response and delivery.
