What car can do 50mpg or close (or better!), be fun to drive, reasonable on long drives and cost £6k or less, ideally with less than 50,000 miles.

4 seats, ideally a 4 or 5 door, but accepted likely to be something small.

I don't think Mini Cooper Diesels fall into the price range as yet (or anywhere close) and perhaps Fabia VRSs are likely to be too high mileage and a bit thrashed by now, but that is the sort of thing I was thinking of. Leftfield choices gratefully received as well.

What about a little Seat Arouser? (Arosa)

Seen a few about and with the right mods can make a nippy little motor.

Cheap tax too

Previous shape Seat Ibiza or Leon Cupra Diesel. 160/150bhp respectively. Can probably do close to 50mpg driven gently.
Not sure about prices but they're getting on a bit now so should be able to get them at that price.

How about the Alfa 147 JTD with 140bhp?

The answer is a KIA pro_Cee'd, 2.0 CRDI Sport. Like this:

good stuff, keep them coming. Is the 147 reasonably well built? Have heard a few horror stories about Alfa dealers/servicing but it would be nice to have an Alfa at some point.

I am an utter Alfa nut and would never try to put someone off. But with the 147 you might want to look at some footage of them being crashed. It isn't pretty.

Something like this?

Honda Insight.. It might not be "Holy JESUS" fast or fun, but I think they're a genuinely cool car.

320d Cd Sport?

That would be where my £6k would go. Maybe not as chuckable as the smaller hatches but its a class chassis with decent buid quality IMO.

Agreed. Having the remaining manufacturers warranty until 2015 has got to be nice too. What do these retail at new?

Plenty of Fabia vRS out there for around £6k in the dealer network. Bought mine a month ago.

Glad I didn't see that Kia though.....would have been a tough call.

Alfa gt jtd.

They are a bargin. Plus the jtd engine is great for a derv. Remappable to 190ish

They handle ok, certainly no less fun than a fabia vrs I imagen

Surely the only answer to this is the MK1 Fabia VRS?

I have run a Fabia VRS for just over a year now. Really enjoyable car - bit like a go-kart..

Value for money wise i dont think i will ever replace it. Unless we have kids and we need a bigger second car. Even then i would probably continue running it as a shed.

Forget the people who say its fast than a Ferrari etc. But it is capable of surprising a lot of very decent cars out there which cost nearly 5x as much!

So you want big on the inside, small on the outside, fast and there fore powerful, yet good on fuel, fun to drive so suspect focused with good steering, yet comfy so squishy and non sharp steering and all for £6k....

Ok, let me see what the crystal ball says. biggrin

On a slightly more sensible note, how about a Brabus ForFour? 50mpg should be possible from a 1.5 turbo, yet with a 174bhp they'll crack 60mph in 6.7 sec and top out near 140mph. You can remap them to around 200hp too.

I've been in a similar frame of mind to the OP and would quite happily go for a well maintained 2006 147 JTDm for about £4k. 150bhp standard, remappable (get the EGR valve blocked and mapped out too) to 190bhp easily for more fun.

Not the best handling car, plenty of understeer, but that makes it more fun!
