So over the past few years I have had various imported cars but always cars the importer had in stock. Does anybody have any experience in sourcing cars directly from Japan?

Reason I ask is I’m looking for a Datsun 240Z, I have just moved house and have a new garage calling out for a restoration project. When I look on the web all I seem to find is relatively new cars at Japanese car auctions or Supras! I ideally want something in average or slightly tatty condition as long as its not rotted through.

So please all help welcome! The question again is how do I find the car I’m looking for to import, as the numbers in the UK are low and the ones that become available tend to be in very good condition already.

Thanks

Will.

With an old car, I would say that it's essential that you use an importer who has an agent in Japan who can inspect the car properly. The usual grading (1-5, 5 being 'new') won't apply to a lot of the old cars because they've had a restoration. These cars often come up as 'R' on the grading because they've been repaired. This means you need someone to actually eyeball the car.

Two companies that I often hear recommendations of are www.torque-gt.co.uk and http://www.japaneseimportspecialists.co.uk but I haven't used them personally I'm afraid.

This car is going through on Thursday, just to whet your appetite!
