Ran it for 2+ years daily, aside from the head gasket going last December due to being sold a faulty or incorrect specification thermostat it's been extremely reliable.
I took it for MOT a week ago, and ever since it has not been right.
I first noticed it cutting out when pottering around 30mph limits only.
After some welding for MOT, and a new exhaust, brakes, suspension and electrical faults fixed I took it for retest, on the way there it broke down and wouldn't start for about 1 minute of turning it over. I eventually got there and it passed. You would think happy days however...
As soon as I got it to a nation speed limit road, and accelerated hard it will run okay for 30 seconds or so, say go up to 60mph, then splutter cut out and die, like its ran out of fuel. Then take a bit to re start.
It has fuel in the tank.
After inspection the fuel filter is not full, like it usually is. And this is the first time I have noticed air bubbles in the petrol pipe to the pump (attached to engine).
The pump seems to be working, I just don't think its getting enough petrol to keep it running when I have my foot down.
Had it on the ramp, all pipes connected, no nicks in them or kinks (was issue with my Monza). Changed filter to smaller filter at request of garage.
Mechanics took parts off Webber carb and cleaned it with carb cleaner, adjusted timing slightly. No difference.
I did run it totally out if petrol not so long ago. But it was fine ever since.
What do I try next, a new petrol pump?
I know the car, I know things break on old cars, she is X reg. But it's the coincidence I don't like, something has changed while having work done.

Sounds like my old one,it spat it's dummy out when the new owner tried to drive it home.10 minutes after he bought it.
Like yours mine was very reliable the whole time i owned it but sometimes they really do just break.
Anyway, new owner replaced the carb and now runs fine again i believe.

Today I replaced the fuel pump. This made NO difference.
I then checked the fuel pipe to pump, there was a loose rubber pipe at the rear where it bends up to the tank, I replaced this, and for the first time the fuel filter filled up again. I managed to accelerate up to 70 okay, for the first time since all the work, then turned round and it cut out on the way back.
Now there is just as much air in the fuel pipe as before and only sometimes will the filter fill up.
Maybe the pipe attached to tank is loose and old like the one I replaced????

You might get more joy over on the XR Boards? It seems you know more about the CVH than most on here.
I`m a regular/lurker on here; http://www.xrstyle.co.uk/forums/index.php
Good luck Tony (Sierra XR4i)

Do you have an inline fuel accumulator? I know the 2.8i capris have one bolted to the front side of the tank, between the fuel pump and fuel filter. It's very rare for one to fail, but given the things youve tried it might be an option.
Dont know if the xr3 has one though, the capri ran k jetronic bosch setup so it may be different if youre on a non injection vehicle.

There's no accumulator, I can assume the huge filter previously fitted did that job. It's the bubbles in the petrol pipe that I think hold the key here. Surely there should be no air, it should be a constant flow of petrol. If its drawing air in from somwhere. but then I dont know. I'm just learning everything as I go.
Will have a gander on XR boards.

It seems to have been the fuel sender unit in the petrol tank. The pick up pipe was loose (it's meant to be fixed angled to the bottom of the tank) as a result it was thrashing around in the tank with movement of the car.
I say seems.... I've not had it out for a proper test yet as the bottom arm I fitted has messed up the tracking quite a lot! So off to a garage this week for that to be sorted.
