Nova Distributor

Help help! my sons 1985 1.2 nova keeps having problems with the distributor, 3 times now either the pins that hold the weights have come off or the springs that are on the top have worn through the top of the pins, having resulted in having to have 2 reconditioned units. Now after happening a 3rd time I have taken it apart myself and am going to get the loose pins hopefully welded back on. But does anyone know why this keeps happening?

A loose cambelt will cause much increased stress on the advance mechanism due to the varying rotational speed of the camshaft that this causes at low engine speeds.
