Toyota Help Needed Please

Good morning boys and girls,
I know this is one of the most un PH cars on the road but my daily snotter of a 1998 Toyota Avensis 1.8 GLS Auto has let me down and I'm stuck. When trying to start the car the engine fires for 1 second then dies. It does fire, it does turn over strongly, the rev counter moves as it fires, there is fuel pressure up to the rail and I'm stumpped.

Any ideas or help would be great as I'm damed if I'll go to Toyota for a car thats worth £300.

Spark plugs and leads fine / on tight? possible damage to the cables, or water has got in there? Or perhaps coilpack?

Any tell tale lights or anything on the dash or anything? My old Corsa did a similar thing when the transponder in the key for the immobiliser stopped working.

I know you say there is (some) fuel in rails but any fuel in the tank?


It is a toyota after all
