It would be interesting to see the result of an open vote, Labour has as many divisions on Europe but they seem to keep a lid on it better than the Conservatives.

Cameron is so stuffed if he does this, he will become the most hated Tory leader in history.
What a complete moron!!
Indeed - this is near enough a scandal in my view. I'm surprised it hasn't caused more interest on here - though I suppose the 22 by 7s are taking a lot of the interest today.

That was a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, which was enacted before he could do anything about it.

He doesn't want a referendum on the EU beacause the Lib Dems are very pro EU. He's just trying to keep them happy.

The problem is though that the huge majority of the public are stupid and don't have a clue when it comes to stuff like this. They have no real idea whether it is a good thing or not, and are easily lead by the press who are following their own agendas.

My own feeling on it is that a sudden and complete withdrawal from the EU would be massively damaging to the UK economy. I don't like the EU as an institution as it is corrupt and unaccountable. It is also, due to the current economic position, weak. That is something that we should be exploiting to the maximum extent to force reform and turn the EU back into an alliance of economies with proper transparency and accountability, and away from federalisation by stealth.

You will not change the EU. It is systmically socialist and 'run' (I use the term losely because teh debacle of teh PIIGS and the fact the EU accounts have never once been signed off indicate a total lack of leadership, control or responsibility) by politicians who are themselves wedded to the EUSSR ideal.

He said today that there would be a referendum on the EU if new powers were enacted that transferred more power from West Minster to the EU. he said that there wouldn't be a referendum on the current status quo.

It's not everyone though is it? Just PH.

Try that poll on the Hackney & District Albanian single mothers group forum.

Email sent to media we / MP, point out that I expect her to follow the wishes of the people she works for and vote for a referendum . . . . .given the stty responses to the other correspondence I've sent her, I'm not holding out much hope.

It really is a bit confusing that I'm actually missing the correspondence and debate that Stephen Hesford, the former MP for Wirral south (labour bod, former barrister) put into replying to my enquiries.

He promised a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Brown ratified the treaty in a rush, despite Labour's 2005 manifesto having promised a referendum, so Cameron could not hodl the promised referendum.

The Tory eurosceptic leaders are being silly. They are damaging the most eurosceptic Tory PM since Heath took us into the EEC. He has already said he wil use the coming negotiations on further integration of the Eurozone to renegotitate our terms of membership. The unspoken threat behind that renegotiation will be our withdrawal. If we have already voted to withdraw, we get no say and they make it as difficult as possible for us.

If the country is so anti-EU, why isn't Nigel Farage PM?

The nation obviously doesn't think it's a particularly important issue.
There's a few fuddy-duddy foreigner-hating nutjobs who keep banging the drum on this (many of them here on PH), yet the majority of the country DO NOT CARE.

If the country hates getting punctures so much, why doesn't everyone commute to work on a pogo stick?
