I've seen an old L reg (1973?) Ford Escort on someones drive and it's been there for quite a few years looking very sorry for itself. It clearly hasn't been used for many years, I've only seen it from the back so I don't know about the overall condition, but the boot has rusted pretty badly, well the whole back end really.

What I wanted to know was if anyone with knowledge of them knows what these things are like for restoring: cost of parts, parts availability, easy to work on, etc.

It was just a thought really, thanks for any replies in advance

Restorable - well - anything is within reason but if it's sat there for that amount of time it will be pretty knackered. Much better to buy a better base car to begin with unless that car is something special - a Mexico or twin cam etc and even then it might only be worth having for the parts. If you check Ebay at the mo there are a number of 'non basket case' auctions that would give you a starter which would be more expensive to start with but far less of a headache than an utterly rotten MK1
