Okay, so when I put my foot down in 3rd the car splutters to a stop and is a bugger to start again.

After some troubleshooting it looks like there isnt enough petrol in the fuel filter next to the carb. It was always full before, now it's empty/ish.

Also there are bubbles in the pipe to the pump, never noticed this before.

Had the carb in bits to clean, fitted new filter, new pump.

There are no more inline filters other than the one under bonnet.

Today I changed a small bit of rubber fuel pipe, (the majority is copper pipe). This was old and quite loose, after doing so the air bubbles seemed less and for once the filter filled up with petrol like it used to. The car was a little bit better running for longer, then same symptoms again....

You're on the right track I reckon. Renew all of the rubber pipe, and check the copper bits for pinholes.

Ok thanks, I was hoping not to have to take the tank off. maybe there's some old rubber that perished and is letting air in where the pipe joins the tank.

How would I go about getting a new fuel pipe the copper one, in the correct shape for the car. Motor factors in the past have handed over a ball of rolled up copper. My dad went mad at my mum for accepting it. One thing I remember from my childhood!

I once had this problem in a Triumph Dolly. Turned out there were bits of balloon in the tank which were periodically blocking the pipe at that end. How it got there is anyone's guess but I wouldn't rule out some other form of crus in your tank in this case.

I shall take the tank off tomorrow and have a look. Should there be any air bubbles in the fuel supply though?
