Sorry if I've missed a thread on this already, but I noticed on tonight's Watchdog that the problems that some people have with DPFs are becoming a little more public.

Wonder if it will lead to people turning back to petrol a little?

Just watched it.

Can't believe the muppet who was complaining at fiat for 'selling' him the derv version claiming they didn't tell him about the dpf feature.

he obv wanted the model with the most mpg and the diesel being more expensive fiat sold him it.

Also do some research before you buy a car you wining cretin!

I thought it was mongs who drive around town. i have had vw, audis, pugs all with with the black stuff and fap and dpf. usually driving longer distances at above 56 mph sorts it, but they can always be written out the ecu.

Racking up many miles never had a problem., twice came on but a burn sorted it.

From now on, I am going to maintain high revs for at least 15 minutes per journey - just to be safe.

Why did it cost £250 to clean the Nissan's DPF if all they need is a good run?

The only way to make sure you are being environmentally friendly, is to make sure they are glowing red. smile

Because beyond a certain point, they can't be unblocked just by driving them, and have to be regenerated manually by a dealer - this normally only happens when the owner has been driving with the warning lights on for a while

BTW, there's already another thread running on this

Sometimes its not as simple as that. If its only driven for short periods of time then the dpf cant re-gen its self so that is why you have to use the dealer software and perform a forced re-gen. Altough £250 is a lot of money for something that will take no longer than an hour

why do people run small diesels around town & cities rarely going over 40mph? ... must be part of the 'all diesels are cheaper to run' delusion many seem to have ... do more research & read yer handbooks folks

Seems to me that a lot of the expensive cures are with the cars using Elyos fluid - costs quite a bit even DIY. That's why I stayed away from Fords, Peugeots, Volvos & Renaults - my Saab has the system where extra fuel is injected if the filter gets blocked. In the 34k miles I have run the car, I have never seen evidence of regen occurring and I have the SID display constantly on MPG. The only times it has gone below 45 is when I have been towing. Idle has always been rock steady, like the performance (only missing was when the No. 3 injector wiring played up, sorted quickly)
However, I do most of my driving on m/ways, and do not hang about otherwise. If I were to have needed a car for short trips, I would have definitely got a petrol, even though I tow. I know that the occasional blast would clear it but I couldn't be arsed if all my motoring was short runs.

Could you just do a 30 minute town drive in first and second? May sound like a ploughing competition, but it should clear it, no?

For a FAP it is actually a good idea, as it allow the soot to burn at a lower temperature and lasts about 80 k, but about 300 quid a litre.

But very easy like i said to rewrite out the ecu.
