Stunning debut albums

Just been re-listening to Burn My Eyes by Machine Head after a LONG gap - forgot what a good album it is. Also been listening to Delphic's first album in the car (Acolyte)...and both just don't sound like debut albums - too strong, too polished.


So...which debut albums blew you away when you bought them, which do you keep going back to as the definitive work by the band???

Linkin Park's first album Hybrid Theory - what a debut!

And Evanescence's first, Fallen.

Ooh, just thought of another - Iron Maiden's first, entitled Iron Maiden, imaginitively enough!

Pearl Jam - for me - always struggled to best Ten in terms of consistently great tunes. They came close with Vs but not close enough.

For a debut album that was, at the time (I imagine), totally unexpected and years ahead of the game I'd go for:



Even listening to it now, it beggars belief that it was released in 1978.

very old, but Steely Dan - You Can't Buy A Thrill from 1972. just... epic.

Left Hand Path by Entombed. I think they were only about 17 when they released it too, genius.

And co-incidently Sabbaths 'Sabbath' album

But not forgetting the Pistols
And U2s Boy
And RATM
And Hendrix
And Aslans 'Feel No Shame'

I'm sure there's more that would spring to mind. But there's lots whose 2nd albums I much prefer to the first (excepting those above)

Stunning Debut albums?
Rage Against The Machine - takes some beating.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome To The Pleasuredome - the sheer bredth of imagination going on in that album!
Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell - just classic.
Kate Bush - The Kick Inside - all from the mind of a teenager, incredible.
The Stone Roses - topical at present, but it was a step change at the time.
Pearl Jam - Ten - just a brilliant album whether it was a debut or album number 10.
Van Halen - nobody had heard that before!

Led Zeppelin I - amazing dynamics for something recorded so simply.
Rickie Lee Jones - Rickie Lee Jones (her best album by far)
Dire Straits - Dire Straits - benefits from being slightly rougher than all the polished albums therefater
Van Halen - Van Halen - as another poster said
Heart - Dreamboat Annie
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden - aggressive heavy rock with a punk like vocal delivery


For the modern stuff

Foo Fighters - just Dave Grohl recording everything on his own, very different from later stuff
Arctic Monkeys - outstanding lyrics from a bunch of young fellas
and of course...
Oasis - Definitely Maybe - wouldn't say it was their defining album, but definitely stunning

Two albums that were better than any debut album has any right to be.
