What were you willing to do to get car you've always wanted?
Discussion
Hello everyone,
Just out of curiosity, what were you willing to do in favor to get the dream car you always wanted? I know many of us are willing to trade the car in favor of buying a house, but in extreme situations, have anyone done the opposite? Please share your story of saving for a thing you have always dreamt from. And please tell us that do you think it was worth all the effort you did, or was the dreaming and saving better part of the thing after all? As you know, dream is usually a lot better than the reality.
We don't necessarily have to talk about the values of certain things since the compromises that you had to do is related to everyone's wealth. Did you have to give up on your expensive hobby, golf perhaps, or did you have to leave your yacht unused for a while? How much did you have to redesign your lifestyle or something else that in the end, would let you get something you've saved for?
I'm in a situation that I would need to save up at about 10,000 EUR to eventually get something I want without compromising my standards of living too much. I'm ready to take the challenge. Keeping a sub 20 MPG- vehicle as a daily driver is not the best aid to get the money together. Actually i thought of public transportation, really, but it turned out not be that cheap as i thought of. Of course it would let me have clear conscience for the Co2 i saved. So I thought of buying a really modest cheap hatchback at the half of the gas mileage of the guzzler. On the gas itself it would cut my fuel bills to half every month. Not bad! The next thing i did was to take additional work (actually 3rd one) for odd evenings and weekends, that would eventually give me something extra, even though you have to pay 50% income tax in Finland for additional jobs. Being a Finn in my 20's, you tend to spend quite a lot on the liquor at the bars and clubs too. Giving up on the drinking is not an option so i thought of playing it smart and get very wasted in home before going out.
The drinking would save me one Michelin Pilot sport in a month. The total sum of 10,000 EUR would include few successful trades by my own company as well. I've planned that i should be able to buy the car I've always wanted, a Porsche 996 next June.
Did you have any stories to share? Did you success or did you not? I would be very interested to hear how the people saved up for their dreams and justified their purchases? Because I think that for some people deciding not to buy their favorite 10,000 GBP design couch is essentially as hard as for someone not to buy a 500,00 GBP television.
I dont know does this topic have any sense at all, but this just came into my mind.

Nothing extreme from me. What I was prepared to do was WAIT. Saved up over a period of time until I had the funds to buy and run my car. No finance/loans. Set myself a reasonable time period to get the money saved, then realised I'd have to extend this by 50%. But ended up getting an even better car through patience and a spot of good fortune. I'm far too boring/risk averse/tight fisted to just say "to hell with it" and splash the cash. I always find it's worht the wait.
