I think anyone who doesn't want to rely on a system that the US can turn on & off at a whim would be quite interested in that system? iPhone 4GS supports it...

eta, just checked, it's GLONASS that the 4GS supports. Doh.

But (if it works) it will break gps users dependence on an american system
with limited accuracy (to the public) that they can and DO disable at will
wherever they wish.

The question is will our existing kit work with it?

ETA i dont really see the connection with road pricing as that can be done
with the current US gps sats just the same.
the gps is only used to provide location data the feedback to the tracking/billing
system would most likely be done via the mobile phone networks.

A lot of military equipment relies on GPS systems and if the yanks get a monk on they can switch off or scramble their sat signals so no one else can use them. Sticking our own ones up there gives us the ability to continue using gps systems if the yanks go home and take their ball with them.
