I had a crown put in a few years ago and as I udnerstand it was based exactly on the old tooth.

It is a bit of an odd shape in that on the outer side (the visible bit when you smile) the tooth fills i nthe gap between the other 2 teeh fine - but on the inner side there is a gap on oen side - this is caused by the curvature on the teeth.

The issue is that food can get caught between the gap and its annoying

Question is can I have a new crown re-moddel to totally 'plug the gap' - woudl it require soem skill by the dentist to work out what the new crown should be shaped like inorder to fill i nthe gap properly?

It's the lab technician who designs/makes the crown although the dentist will check if the contact point is adequate or not. There may or may not be a problem with the crown you have, you must have noticed that sometimes you get food stuck between your real teeth from time to time?

Needs to be looked at by a dentist to know for sure.

Just had a closer look

I think the problem is that is there is a 'full' gap between the crown and one of the normal teeth - this allows food to get inbetween and get stuff - far more so than with the other teeth. Its only very small - but big enough.

Most of the other natural teerth seem to be VERY clsoe or touching.

Is it possible to make crowns that literally cram in and fill the gap or do they all have to be smaller than the whole gap to some extent?

Well there shouldn't be a full gap for the reason you have mentioned but the teeth shouldn't come together like a couple of bricks either.

There should be a contact point point in the middle with the tooth curving away to form what is known as the embrasure. This allows you to clean between the teeth with a toothbrush. If the teeth were just like bricks you'd get decay from trapped food, the gums wouldn't be at all happy and aesthetically it would look st.

You need to get someone to look at it as it may need replacing so that you have an anatomically correct contact point.
