Z4M vs. 335i vs. E46 M3 vs. 996 911 vs. 135i vs 645ci
Discussion
I really need some help on this. Further to my What Car thread, this is where I am now at. Surely i can't go around testing all these cars? On the other hand, I am planning to buy a £500 smoker to use while I break my car and figure out the next car.
Z4M - Love this, clear first choice for me. However, they are still a bit over budget.
335i Coupe - Nice, like these a lot but not sure it really grabs me. need to drive it. Starting to come in around £10k - £11k now which is appealing.
E46 M3 - Love these but want a more modern car ideally.
996 911 - Same as M3. Would want a C4 as I prefer the styling. 6 secs 0-60 isn't fast enough, but might be missing the point here?
135i M-Sport Coupe - Like these, although not as good looking as the 1M with the wider arches. Should I hold out until next Spring and see if prices have fallen under £12k? A convertible would be nice.
645ci - Something a mate suggested. V8 appeals and looks great with the right wheels. A big car though and a completely different experience to everything else listed.
Anybody got any experience or opinions? I have ruled out an Elise as I would want a 111R not S and they are out of budget. Might be too raw anyway. VX220 may be too raw and I would prefer a little bit of storage space.

All great cars IMO, I dont think the M1 will be near £12 by the spring though.Z4M - Love this, clear first choice for me. However, they are still a bit over budget.

My choice would be the Z4 I think.
God I would like to be in your position

Boring questions alert !
How many miles do you ? Is maintenance costs or MPG an issue ? Really need rear seats ? Any track use ?
Some happy jappy suggestions - Nissan 350Z, Honda S2000.
Girlfriend wants something good on fuel, but it's MY car and I do 12 miles a day, so am happy to ignore her! Don't fancy an S2000 at all due to the powerband. 350Z is very tempting but I don't know, just something missing that I can't put my finger on.....How many miles do you ? Never thought I would be in this position myself tbh. It's surreal. Will have about £7k cash when I have sold everything from the MR2, and will finance the last bit.
Z4M starting to look a bit old hat if you ask me - reportedly a bit tricky on the limit, and tight cabin. Great engine though.
996 - available on budget, but far too many bad ones.
135i - it's a bit...ugly
645i - tempting
335i - that's what I'd have for the money.
M3 - as a preference to the Z4M, yes, I think I'd take this - but I'd rather have the newer, 335i for the looks and, I imagine, lower running costs. Either way, I'd have a 3-series.

335i good for 10mpg more than the E46 M3, which is good enough for me. I can pretend I have bought a responsible car 996 - available on budget, but far too many bad ones.

I am very tempted by it, and want to drive one.
I have a 135i cabrio.
Bloody great little car.
Goes fast, handles very nicely.
Lots of creature comforts too, with the heated seats, satnav, internal memory for CDs, flappy paddle gears and so forth.
It's a good car when it's dark, raining, and stuck in traffic - but when the sun comes out and the traffic clears then you tap it into S (or just use the paddles) and drive it like a loon.

I have owned an e92 m3 dct an e46 manual and did 50k miles in it plus three track days and now own a z4m. Z4 is more edgy handling wise but has a far greater sense of occasion to drive than an e46 and is far more involving and fun to drive than the dct e92 m3.
I have just driven a 56 plate e46 CS, and thought I may have liked it more than my z4, based on my fond memories of the e46. No chance. Having now got to grips with my z4, with csl wheels ps2's rear bush limiting kit (must for any e46 or z4m) and AP 6 pots up front, I'd never go back to an m3. I drove the z4 850 miles home from the ring in one go and at 6ft 1 didn't feel cramped and love the car.
The slightly edgy handling just keeps u focussed and th steering, is excellent, better than e46 and e92.
I have no experience of owning the other vehicles but for me, if it's a BMW, it must have an M badge.
Good luck!

I'd z4ms are a bit out of budget then I'd think carefully about buying. Maintenance is not cheap, even routine stuff. Assuming you use BMW insp 2 costs for an M car are pretty formidable. Great fun but not terribly well made, my 330i I just picked up 4 grand is considerably better built, you get plenty of rattles and other "character" in ZM...quickly forgotten when driven properly though. I'd have thought an m3 would be a better bet than a leggy and expensive 335i and I doubt the real world mpg is much different. Try them all but I'd say the M3 is best as they're affordable and at an age where they can be serviced independently without losing value.

Have you driven both in the same way over the same roads as I'd be surprised if the e46 is worse. My e36 M3 *could* get over 35mpg if driven within the speed limit sensibly on a long journey. I had a 335i for about a week and I'm pretty sure it wasn't better. I can't believe an e46 is significantly worse tbh.

M3 will sound a lot better too and has less bits to go wrong.

0-60 in 6 secs? uumm in the snow maybe! Even the 3.4 carreras could dip below 5secs......A c4s is a lovely looking car.
Good luck with your search
