So.

I now have a 2001 Golf 2.0 Cab, AUTO which was given to me because the owner couldn't be arsed with it. hehe

Drives ok... but I was told about this "power loss" thing that I mentioned in THIS THREAD > http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

However, I don't think it's the head gasket - although apparently it IS using water a bit.

It SEEMS like the auto doesn't shift down when you floor it, instead, it waits for the revs to slowly get up to speed.

That's in "D".

If you put it in "3" or "2" it takes off briskly and then gets stuck at about 50 or 60 respectively.

Any idea?

Do you mean it doesn't kick down? If so, there's a switch under the throttle pedal.

If not, check the autobox fluid level.

Or just bin it and try again with something else.

Kickdown switch on all the autos I've had has been a big round thing that activates when the pedal is to the metal - can usually be screwed in and out to adjust, too.

Right: tt update.

Under the accelerator is just a plastic disc that does nothing at all (it seems).

On another forum I found a whole thing about resetting the computer's memory of the throttle angle. Did it. Seemed possibly different for a few minutes. Then went back to being a slugy berk.

Something to do with it needing a resistor wire.

Hammer?

Doesn't have an oil cooler for the autobox on the radiator, does it? Could the coolant loss be going into the autobox oil?

Wifey's auto Golf was doing something similar. It would also die sometimes when you come to a stop when the engine is warm. The indy diagnosed it as a dodgy crank position sensor. Getting it fixed next week.

You've no idea how to use a hammer, you amateur, you'll probably neuter yourself.

I'll come round with my hammer and show you how its done. Assuming you don't actually like the car...

It's a free car is only worth scrap value.

It does drive has valid mot and ved. Run it until that expires and put up with said issue.

See it as a challenge and learn to drive differently to anticipate the problem. Could be run
