the m6 may be faster, but the m1 hold legendary status, being the first real 'M' and designed with a no-costs barred approach to beating the italians at their own game. The M6 is too close to the M5 for my liking
The Preston bypass was actually the first 'M'...Four hours after the Preston Bypass opening ceremony in 1958, Harold Bradshaw earned a place in UK motoring history when he became the first recorded motorway casualty after falling from a bridge above the new road.
The M1 opened a year later. Five thousand men were employed to build it and, as well as the road, 183 bridges had to be constructed. On average one bridge was completed every three days.

I would have thought M5, M42/A42, M1 would be a reasonable route, then depending on whereabouts in Huddersfield you're going I'd head west either on the M62 or just before and go cross country.
I wouldn't fancy using the M6 throughout Cheshire, then having to head around the M60 and over the Pennines on a Friday night.

I was trying to be clever by using phrases that apply to both the bimmers and the road network here in the UK. Seems it was a little high-brow for a Friday afternoon...
Oh right I see - I checked his garageVauxhall Corsa 1,2 16V
Suzuki Swift GLS
And quickly thought of the road network...

I agree about the M5/M6. Once you are driving them it's hard to tell the difference. Not so sure about the M1 though, my dad likes it a lot but I don't think it's quick enough these days.
Also thought it was strange how the M7 was for Ireland only...Thought it would have been popular everywhere?

If you ever go to germany I can recommend the A8. A bit boring, but beautifully constructed and the scenery is quite nice.
What are your thoughts on the new M4?

if you ever find yourself going to Finland, it's good to take the E63. Its good for covering 1000+km in a day
